Recruiting Profile: Mason Fakahua (ATH, Class of 2017)

Cedar City quarterback Mason Fakahua became BYU’s 22nd verbal commitment (Class of 2017), as he reported on Twitter:

Fakahua preps at Cedar City High School (Cedar City, Utah), where as a junior in 2015 he carried the ball 127 times for 1250 yards and seven touchdowns, completed 107 of 210 passes (.509) for 2419 yards and 15 touchdowns to only five interceptions.  As a senior he played in just seven games before sitting the rest of the season with a leg injury.  In those games he completed 82 of 149 passes (.550) for 1363 yards and ten touchdowns.  Fakahua also runs the 100m and throws the Javelin for the track team.  He was one of the top performing quarterbacks at the All-Poly camp at BYU last summer.

I caught up with Mason this afternoon to ask him about his commitment:

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU? Why do you feel BYU is a good fit for you?
Mason: I have always loved BYU and I just felt real comfortable when I was there. I believe it is a good fit because the school is not too big and not too small, and the people are loving.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Mason: Utah State, SUU, and Weber State

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Mason: My favorite movies are Mulan, all three Rush Hour movies, and Major Payne.  My favorite book is probably Steve Young’s “My Life Behind the Spiral”

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Mason: Someone told me never to give up in what I believe in, and to fight for what I want.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player (collegiate or pro) that you seek to emulate on the field?
Mason: Marcus Mariota because not only is he a great player but he’s mostly a great person

BYU Insider: Anything else you’d like Cougarfans to know about you?
Mason: What I want the fans to know is that I’m all in and bleeding blue!

Fakahua is rated 2-stars Scout and Rivals, and was not rated by ESPN.  His 247Sports Composite is a 2-star with a score of 0.7790.  He holds scholarship offers from BYU, Southern Utah, Weber State, and Utah State.  He plans on serving an LDS mission directly from high school and will join the Cougars in 2019.
