Prep Tracker, Week 15: Seven Cougar commits compete in state title games

prep_trackerThis weekend featured title games in Utah and Hawaii, and a lot of future Cougars were in on the action.  In the Utah 5A title game it was Tongi Langi and Bingham High that were victorious with a 17-10 win over Lone Peak.  Langi had eight tackles and an interception in the win, while Ammon Hanneman (six tackles), Preston Lewis, Connor Pay (one tackle), and Jackson McChesney (14 yards rushing, 32 receiving) played admirably in the loss. In the Utah 4A title game Apu Ika had two tackles and a sack for East as they defeated Springville 48-20.  Meanwhile in Hawaii, Sekope Lutu Latu and Kahuku High fell to perennial powerhouse St. Louis 30-14 in their title game.

In other action Keenan Ellis had two touchdown receptions as Bonita Vista advanced in the California sectionals and Donovan Hanna had a touchdown reception as ALA advanced in the Arizona playoffs.   Game summaries for each of the Cougar commits are listed below.

BYU Commits still in-action

  • Keenan Ellis (WR, Bonita Vista HS, @Keenan_Ellis17). Bonita Vista (5-7, 2-2) defeated El Capitan 41-6 in the second round of the CIF San Diego sectionals. Ellis had touchdown receptions of six and 78 yards. Season Totals: in 8 games has 35 receptions for 827 yards (23.6 avg) and nine touchdowns; nine kickoff returns for 235 yards (33.4 avg), including one 95 yard kickoff return for a score
  • Donovan Hanna (TE/DT, American Leadership Academy; @donnyd119). The ALA Patriots (13-1, 6-0) defeated Northwest Christian 41-21 in the second round of the 3A AIA playoffs. Hanna had five receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown and punted six times for 222 yards (37.0 avg). Season totals: 50 receptions for 952 yards, 10 TDs; one carry for three yards; 24 tackles (7 solo, 17 assisted); 2 TFL; 1 sack; 15 punts for 490 yards (with 5 inside the 20); kickoff return for 8 yards (and two touchbacks).
  • Ammon Hannemann (S, Lone Peak HS; @Ammon_Hann1). Lone Peak (12-2, 8-0) was defeated in the state title game by Bingham 17-10. Hannemann had six tackles.  Season totals: 69 tackles; two interceptions; one reception for 7 yards
  • Siaki “Apu” Ika (DT/OL, East HS, @Jackfish801). East (14-0) completed their perfect season with a 48-20 beat down of Springville in the Utah 4A title game. Apu had two tackles and a sack in the win.  East maintained their national rank of No. 22. Season totals: 16 tackles (10 solo, six assisted); one sack
  • Tongi Langi (DB, Bingham HS; @Big_Tuna24). Bingham (14-0) completed their perfect season with a 17-10 victory over Lone Peak in the 5A title game. With the win Bingham maintained their No. 17 spot in the national rankings, and stayed at No. 1 in the Midlands region. Langi had an outstanding game with eight tackles and an interception. Season Totals:  60 tackles; 1 punt return for 60 yards, 1 TD; one interception
  • Preston Lewis (DE/LB, Lone Peak HS, @plewis_8). Lone Peak (12-2, 8-0) was defeated in the state title game by Bingham 17-10. Lewis recorded no stats. Season totals (in 8 games): 27 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two interceptions
  • Sekope Lutu Latu (K/P/TE, Kahuku HS; @LatuSekope). The Red Raiders (11-2, 6-0) fell to powerhouse St. Louis 30-14 in the Hawaii state title game. Latu’s stats are not yet available. Season Totals: eight receptions for 178 yards, 1 TD; two tackles; 6-6 on field goals (long of 20); kickoffs and XPT
  • Tyler Manoa (DT/T, Saint Francis HS; @tylermanoa). The Lancers (10-2, 6-1) fell 31-17 to Serra in the second round of the CIF Central Coast sectionals. Manoa recorded no stats. Season Totals: 39 tackles (13 solo, 26 assisted); 9.0 TFL; 5.5 sack; 10 QBH; one blocked field goal; one safety
  • Jackson McChesney (RB, Lone Peak HS, @jackson21cheese). Lone Peak (12-2, 8-0) was defeated in the state title game by Bingham 17-10. McChesney carried the rock three times for 14 yards and had five receptions for 32 yards.  Season totals:  100 carries for 713 yards, 10 TDs; 34 receptions for 504 yards; 3 TDs; 89 yard kickoff return for a TD.
  • Connor Pay (OT/DT, Lone Peak HS; @cpay73). Lone Peak (12-2, 8-0) was defeated in the state title game by Bingham 17-10. Pay had a tackle. Season Totals: No stats.
  • Isaac Rex (TE, San Clemente HS, @Isaac_Rex1). San Clemente (9-3, 3-1) defeated Heritage 23-19 in the second round of the CIF Southern sectionals. Rex had two receptions for 18 yards. Season stats (in five games): 9 receptions for 121 yards, 1 TD
  • Seth Willis (OL, Newtown HS; @seth_willy). The Nighthawks (9-0, 4-0) defeated Brookfield 49-0, their fourth shutout of the season. Season Totals: one tackle
