Dinkelmann preps at Somerset High School (TX), where he was sidelined during his sophomore season with a stress fracture. In three games last year he passed for 444 yards on 34 of 62 (.548) for five touchdowns and two interceptions. He also plays for the basketball, track, and baseball teams.
Dinkelmann is rated 3-stars by Scout, Rivals, and ESPN (grade of 78). He has been offered scholarships to LSU (where he was previously committed), Louisiana-Monroe, Texas, and Texas-San Antonio and has also seen recruiting interest from Alabama and Pittsburgh. He is the nephew of BYU offensive coordinator Ty Detmer, and cousins with current BYU quarterback Koy Detmer Jr. Zadock’s father Johan Dinkelmann played tight end for the Cleveland Browns.

I caught up with Dinklemann to ask him about his recruiting:
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Dinklemann: It has an amazing quarterback history. Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer… I would like to follow in their footsteps. It was a hard decision, but after a lot of thought and talking with my family I decided BYU was the best place for me.
BYU Insider: What are you looking forward to in suiting up for the Cougars?
Dinklemann: The fans. Every game is a packed house and the fans are wild.
BYU Insider: Was there anything in particular that led to your de-commit from LSU?
Dinklemann: The coaching change.
BYU Insider: What is your greatest accomplishment in sports thus far?
Dinklemann: Three rounds in the playoffs this year.
BYU Insider: What are your personal or team goals for 2017?
Dinklemann: Play in December (that means the team will have gone four rounds and gotten to the regional semi-finals).
BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Dinklemann: Do everything in God’s name.
BYU Insider: Who is a current player (collegiate or pro) that you seek to emulate on the field?
Dinklemann: Matt Ryan (Quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons), he’s been my favorite quarterback since his time at Boston College. He’s smart and an incredible competitor.
