Tariq “TJ” Buchanan is a 6-foot-2 174 pound wide receiver and defensive back who has verbally committed to play for the BYU football team, the eighth commitment for the Class of 2017.

Buchanan prepped at Elgin High School (TX), where as a sophomore in 2014-15 he had 15 receptions for 302 yards (20.1 ave) and a touchdown. He also had four tackles and returned five kickoffs for 63 yards (12.6 ave). Last season as a junior Buchanan had 22 receptions for 560 yards (a whopping 25.5 yards per reception) and three touchdowns. He also had five tackles, returned 11 kickoffs for 191 yards (17.4 ave), and five punts 69 yards (13.8 ave). He was named to to the District 17-5A second team as a defensive back.
Buchanan is fast, having recorded a 4.45 forty time, 10.8 100m, and 22.42 200m as part of the track team. Buchanan is also a star for the basketball team, being named to the Texas District 17-5A first team last season. As a junior he averaged 17.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. He was rated 2-stars by Rivals and Scout, and was not rated by ESPN.
