Shumway’s decision of where to play collegiate ball was compounded by his excellence on the basketball court. As a four-year player and two-year starter for the Lone Peak basketball team he had considerable interest from colleges seeking his help on the hardwood. He averaged 6.8 points and 3.1 rebounds his senior season for the National Championship Knights and was named to the 5A All-State first team, as well as the Region 4 first-team. He was an All-State third team (and Region 4 second-team) selection as a junior and an honorable mention as a sophomore.

Shumway was rated 3-stars in football by Rivals and Scout, who also ranked him the No. 1 wide receiver in the Utah class of 2013. ESPN rated him 3-stars as well (grade of 76) and ranked him the No. 8 overall prospect from Utah. Shumway held scholarship offers from BYU, Utah, and Utah State and was also recruited by Boise State, Oregon, Oregon State, and UCLA. He committed to the Cougars on May 14, 2012.
