While many high schools are no longer playing football, the playoffs have kept most of BYU’s commitments busy. Fifteen of BYU’s 25 commitments were in action this week, with most of them advancing further into the playoffs with their teams.
Notable prep performances for the week include: Keenan Ellis (six receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns), Donovan Hanna (three receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown, one tackle, and two punts), Ammon Hannemann (five tackles and an interception returned 63 yards for a touchdown), Tongi Langi (a season high nine tackles), and Jackson McChesney (five rushes for 33 yards, six receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown). Game summaries for each of the Cougar commits are listed below.
BYU Commits still in-action
- Keenan Ellis (WR, Bonita Vista HS, @Keenan_Ellis17). Bonita Vista (4-7, 2-2) defeated West Hills 27-10 in the first round of the CIF San Diego sectionals. Ellis had six receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Season Totals: in 8 games has 35 receptions for 827 yards (23.6 avg) and seven touchdowns; nine kickoff returns for 235 yards (33.4 avg), including one 95 yard kickoff return for a score
- Donovan Hanna (TE/DT, American Leadership Academy; @donnyd119). The ALA Patriots (12-1, 6-0) defeated Florence 38-21 in the second round of the AIA playoffs. Hanna had three receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown, an assisted tackle, and punted twice for 45 yards. Season totals: 45 receptions for 867 yards, nine TDs; one carry for three yards; 24 tackles (7 solo, 17 assisted); 2 TFL; 1 sack; 9 punts for 268 yards (with 4 inside the 20); one kickoff return for 8 yards (and two touchbacks).
- Ammon Hannemann (S, Lone Peak HS; @Ammon_Hann1). Lone Peak (12-1, 8-0) defeated American Fork 66-19 in the 5A semifinals. Hannemann improved on his outstanding performance last week to record five tackles and a 63 yard pick six against AF. Season totals: 63 tackles; two interceptions; one reception for 7 yards
- Bentley Hanshaw (TE/DE, Moorpark HS; @BentleyHanshaw). Moorpark (7-4, 1-2) fell to Ventura 35-19 in the CIF Southern sectionals to end their season. Hanshaw 70 yards receiving. Season stats: 43 receptions for 555 yards, 6 TDS.
- Siaki “Apu” Ika (DT/OL, East HS, @Jackfish801). East (13-0) defeated Maple Mountain 64-13 in the Utah 4A semifinals. Apu had three tackles (two solo) in the win. East climbed to No. 22 in the national rankings. Season totals: 14 tackles (8 solo, six assisted).
- Brandon Ale Kaho (RB/LB, Reno HS; @Brandonkah0). The Reno Huskies (10-2, 4-1) fell 21-6 to Damonte Ranch in the second round of the NIAA Class 4A playoffs, thereby ending their season. Damonte’s game plan was to hold Kaho in-check. He finished with 22 carries for 95 yards. - Tongi Langi (DB, Bingham HS; @Big_Tuna24). Bingham (13-0) defeated Freemont 35-12 in the 5A semifinals. Bingham climbed to No. 17 in the national rankings (Real Prep Nation), and stated at No. 1 in the Midlands region. Langi had a season high nine tackles. - Preston Lewis (DE/LB, Lone Peak HS, @plewis_8). Lone Peak (12-1, 8-0) defeated American Fork 66-19 in the 5A semifinals. Lewis’s stats are not yet available. Season totals (in 8 games): 27 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two interceptions
- Sekope Lutu Latu (K/P/TE, Kahuku HS; @LatuSekope). The Red Raiders (11-1, 6-0) defeated Kapolei 54-7 in the Hawaii State semifinals. They face St. Louis in the finals on Saturday. - Tyler Manoa (DT/T, Saint Francis HS; @tylermanoa). The Lancers (10-1, 6-1) defeated Mountain View 56-27 in the first round of the CIF Central Coast sectionals. Manoa had two quarterback hurries. - Jackson McChesney (RB, Lone Peak HS, @jackson21cheese). Lone Peak (12-1, 8-0) defeated American Fork 66-19 in the 5A semifinals. McChesney rushed five times for 33 yards and caught six passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Season totals: 97 carries for 699 yards, 10 TDs; 29 receptions for 472 yards; 3 TDs; 89 yard kickoff return for a TD.
- Connor Pay (OT/DT, Lone Peak HS; @cpay73). Lone Peak (12-1, 8-0) defeated American Fork 66-19 in the 5A semifinals. Season Totals: No stats.
- Isaac Rex (TE, San Clemente HS, @Isaac_Rex1). San Clemente (8-3, 3-1) defeated Chino Hills 36-13 in the first round of the CIF Southern sectionals. Rex had a reception for 29 yards. Season stats (in five games): 9 receptions for 121 yards, 1 TD
- Jacob Smith (OT, Rosemount HS; @jesmith4530). The Irish (10-2, 8-1) fell to Champlin Park 34-28 in overtime in the Minnesota state playoffs thereby ending their season. Smith recorded no stats. Season Totals: No stats
- Seth Willis (OL, Newtown HS; @seth_willy). The Nighthawks (9-0, 4-0) defeated Brookfield 49-0, their fourth shutout of the season. Season Totals: one tackle
Class of 2017 commits whose seasons have concluded
- Tanner Baker (TE/DE, Alatoona HS, @TBAKE32). Alatoona (6-5 5-2) defeated Lanier 28-6 in the first round of the Georgia playoffs. They will face Glynn Academy this week. Baker is out for the season with a knee injury.
- TJ Buchanan (WR, Elgin HS, @BeastTj3). The Elgin Wildcats (3-7, 3-5) season is over. Season totals: 32 rushes for 216 yards, 5 TDs; two 2PT conversions; 52 receptions for 684 yards, 7 TDs; 15 KR for 188 yards; 4 PRs for 66 yards; 10 total tackles (8 solo, 2 assisted); 2 punts for 37 yards.
- Ben Bywater (ATH, Olympus HS, @benbywater5). Olympus (8-3, 5-2) season is over. Season totals (minus playoff stats): 121 carries for 679 yards and nine TDs; 10 receptions for 77 yards; 75 tackles, 1 sack.
