BYU football: Prep Tracker, Week 2

prep_trackerSeveral BYU football commits got on the scoreboard this weekend in High School football games that saw nineteen of the twenty four BYU football commits in-action. Notable performances came from do-everything players Tariq Buchanan (120 all purpose yards, TD, 2 point conversion, one tackle) and Donovan Hanna (six receptions for 97 yards, 3 tackles, 40 yard punt).  Also lighting up the scoreboard were Bentley Hanshaw (two TD receptions), Jackson McChesney (two rushing TDs), and Isaac Rex (TD reception).  Cameron Latu and Tyler Manoa both had sacks.  Game summaries for each of the commits are listed below.

Class of 2017 commits (listed alphabetically)

  • Tanner Baker (TE/DE, Alatoona HS, @TBAKE32). After winning the 5A state championship last season, the Alatoona Buccaneers (0-2) have seen a rough start to their 2016 campaign dropping their second straight game, this one a 14-30 loss at Cartersville. Baker has not yet been cleared to play due to a knee injury.
  • TJ Buchanan (WR, Elgin HS, @BeastTj3). The Elgin Wildcats (0-1) dropped their season opener at Harker Heights 14-35, despite a strong showing from Buchanan. Tariq carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards (5.2 avg) and a score and caught five passes for 33 yards (6.6 avg). He also had two kick returns for 25 yards, a two point conversion, and a solo tackle. Season totals: 12 rushes for 62 yards, 1 TD, 1 2PT CONV; 5 receptions for 33 yards; 2 KR for 25 yards (12.5 avg), 1 total tackles (1 solo, 0 assisted).
  • Ben Bywater (ATH, Olympus HS, @benbywater5). Olympus (2-0) squeaked out a 5-3 victory over HIghland.  Bywater had 12 carries for 35 yards and five tackles in the win. Season totals: 20 carries for 67 yards; 5 receptions for 33 yards; 13 tackles, 1 sack.
  • Donovan Hanna (TE/DT, American Leadership Academy; @donnyd119). The ALA Patriots (2-0) continued their winning ways with a 14-10 victory over the Pusch Ridge Christian Academy. Hanna had six receptions for 97 yards (16.2 avg), three tackles, and a 40 yard punt. Season totals: 10 receptions for 171 yards; 4 tackles (1 solo, 3 assisted); 1 TFL; 1 punt for 40 yards.
  • Ammon Hannemann (S, Lone Peak HS; @Ammon_Hann1). Lone Peak (2-0) defeated Dixie 47-21 in their home opener. Hannemann’s stats not yet available. Season totals:
  • Bentley Hanshaw (TE/DE, Moorpark HS; @BentleyHanshaw). Moorpark (1-0) defeated Canyon 42-21 in their season opener. Hanshaw had three receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Season stats: 3 receptions for 77 yards, 2 TDS
  • Tongi Langi (DB, Bingham HS; @Big_Tuna24). Bingham (2-0) continued to roll with a 45-0 beatdown over defending 5A state champs Herriman. Langi’s stats are not yet available. Season Totals: 1 punt return for 60 yards, 1 TD
  • Preston Lewis (DE/LB, Lone Peak HS, @plewis_8). Lone Peak (2-0) defeated Dixie 47-21 in their home opener. Lewis’s stats are not yet available.  Season totals:
  • Jackson McChesney (RB, Lone Peak HS, @jackson21cheese). Lone Peak (2-0) defeated Dixie 47-21 in their home opener. McChesney had 13 carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and caught three passes for another 23 yards. Season totals:  21 carries for 78 yards, 3 TDs; 5 receptions for 53 yards.
  • Ryan Rehkow (K, Central Valley HS; @r_rehkow24). The Bears don’t open their season until September 2nd when they face off at Coeur d’Alene.
  • Isaac Rex (TE, San Clemente HS, @Isaac_Rex1). San Clemente (0-1) fell 42-51 to Oceanside in a season opening shootout. Rex had four receptions for 59 yards (14.8 avg) and a touchdown. Season stats: 4 receptions for 59 yards, 1 TD
  • Seth Willis (OL, Newtown HS; @seth_willy). The Nighthawks don’t start their season until September 9th when they face New Fairfield.

Class of 2018 commits

  • Campbell Barrington (OT/DE, University HS; @Campbel33563194). The Titans open their season on September 2nd at Sandpoint (ID). Season Totals:
  • Brandon Ale Kaho (RB/LB, Reno HS; @Brandonkah0). The Reno Huskies opened their season with a convincing 37-7 over Stagg (Stockton, CA). Kaho’s stats not yet available. Season Totals:
  • Jaren Kump (OL/DL, Herriman HS; @jarenkump68). After a good week one victory over Brighton, Herriman was simply destroyed by Herriman 0-45. Game stats are not yet available. Season Totals: six total tackles (0 solo, 6 assisted)
  • Cameron Latu (DE/TE, Olympus HS). Olympus (2-0) continued winning with a 5-3 victory over Highland. Cameron had a tackle and a sack.  Season totals: 3 receptions for 43 yards; seven tackles; two sacks
  • Nathan Latu (DE, Olympus HS; @LatuNathan). Olympus (2-0) continued winning with a 5-3 victory over Highland. Nate’s stats are not yet available.  Season totals:
  • Sekope Lutu Latu (K/P, Kahuku HS; @LatuSekope). The Red Raiders (3-0) continue to dominate, with a 28-0 victory this week over Wai’anae. The win catapulted them to 18 in the national rankings. Because they have been so dominant Latu (the punter) has not had many opportunities to shine.  Stats not yet available.  Season Totals:
  • Tyler Manoa (DT/T, Saint Francis HS; @tylermanoa). The Lancers kicked off their season with a 24-7 victory over Oak Grove. Manoa had multiple tackles for loss and a sack.  Season Totals: 3 TFL; 1 sack
  • Connor Pay (OT/DT, Lone Peak HS; @cpay73). Lone Peak (2-0) defeated Dixie 47-21 in their home opener. Pay did not record any stats.  Season Totals:
  • Jacob Smith (OT, Rosemount HS; @jesmith4530). The Irish kick off their season on September 1st at White Bear Lake. Season Totals:
