Introducing the 2015 Walk-Ons

pittaWith school now officially in-session BYU is permitted by the NCAA to increase their rosters from the summer limit of 105 to the 123 limit Bronco tries to maintain during the season. With thirteen returning walk-ons (two of which are now scholarship players), four preferred walk-ons, and four new walk-ons from open try-outs it appears the roster is just about set.  Who knows, maybe one of these will become the next Dennis Pitta at BYU.

Former Walk-Ons now on Scholarship

Mitchell Juergens (Junior) and Nate Carter (Senior) were both awarded scholarships, which came as no surprise. Juergens had 424 yards receiving with four touchdowns last season and was named to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent Second Team this year. He could contribute as a wide receiver, punt returner, and as a running back during the 2015 season. Carter lettered playing in eight games as a junior last season. He had 290 yards rushing on 46 carries (6.3 yards/carry) and one touchdown last season. With Jamaal Williams out for the season Carter is needed and expected to step up and help fill that void.

Cracking the two-deep

Mitchell Juergens and Nate Carter were able to secure meaningful playing time last season and were rewarded with scholarships this year. That is what everyone else on this list will be trying to do this season. As “Walk-On U” it is inevitable that a handful of these players will see considerable playing time this season and one or two of them may become the next Dennis Pitta.   Right now, the players most likely to see playing time this season are Scott Huntsman (currently listed as #2 SLB), Matt Foley (#1 DS), Koy Detmer (#4 QB), Creed Richardson (#4 SLB), Garrett Juergeens (#4 FC), and Morgan Unga (#4 KAT).
