Taumata “Felesi” (meaning “fresh” in Samoan) Tofi is a 6’3”, 270 pound defensive end for the BYU football team (Class of 2012). The native Samoan greyshirted due to medical reasons in 2012 and then served an LDS mission (Phillippines, Manilla) from March 2013 to March 2015. He will join the team for the 2015 season.
Tofi prepped at Perris High School, where he was a two-time all-league first-team player. He also played volleyball and threw the shot put and discus for the track team.
As a late signee–committing one month after signing day (March 3, 2012)—Tofi was a surprise recruit that flew completely under the radar. He was not rated by Rivals, Scout, or ESPN and was unfamiliar to most Cougarfans at the time of his signing. BYU’s official release shows that he was recruited by Arizona, Fresno State, Utah State, and Washington, however, BYU was his only scholarship offer.
