BYU’s newest football commit is 8th grader Raider Damuni (Class of 2021)

With national letter of intent day come and gone BYU is not slowing down when it comes to recruiting.  Their most recent scholarship offer resulted in a commitment from 8th grader Raider Damuni (Class of 2021).

Damuni played freshman ball at Orem but plans to prep at Timpview High School (UT) next season.  His family recently moved to Utah Valley from Kula Hawaii, when his father Jack—a former BYU safety—was hired by Kalani Sitake as the director of player personnel.   Raider is a 6-foot-0 166 pound athlete (QB, WR, CB) that recently represented Team USA in an international All-American game held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.  He had a defensive touchdown and was named the defensive MVP in the game.  I caught up with Damuni to ask him about his recent commitment:

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Damuni: I love coach Sitake and his staff, and the family atmosphere they build.  For me BYU is the whole package, especially from a spiritual standpoint.  Since I was young I’ve always dreamed about playing for BYU. BYU Insider: Why do you feel BYU is a good fit for you?
Damuni: Because the overall package that BYU offers: spiritually, academically, and athletically all fall into what I want for the school of my choice. because the overall package that BYU offers spiritually, academically, and athletically falls into what I want for the school of my choice.

BYU Insider:  What do you most look forward to in suiting up for the cougars?
Damuni: Just to play in front of my family and friends, and making them proud.  Also, the opportunity to represent Cougar Nation world-wide and follow in the footsteps of my dad.

BYU Insider:  What is your greatest accomplishment in sports? In life?
Damuni: My biggest sports accomplishment happened last month when I took the field for team USA in Cowboy stadium in an All-American game.  I scored a touchdown off defense and earned the defensive MVP of the game.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player (collegiate or pro) that you seek to emulate on the field?
Damuni: Kai Nacua (of BYU).  I loved watching him every Saturday kill it and get pics.
