BYU Football Recruiting Spotlight: 4-Star Maxs Tupai (Class of 2016)

tupai_tnMaxs Tupai is a 4-star defensive end recruit for the BYU football team (Class of 2016) who is still uncommitted. The number one prospect from Utah (ESPN, Rivals) has plenty of offers including Oklahoma, USC, and Wisconsin, but has given very little indication who his front-runners are and will likely be a National Letter of Intent day decision.

Tupai prepped at Murray High School (UT), where as a junior he had 62 tackles (39 solo), 17 tackles for loss, 14.0 sacks, six quarterback hurries, a pass deflection, fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles. He also had a rushing touchdown, one of his 18 carries for 136 yards. Tupai was named to the All-State second team (Deseret News). As a senior he was a one-man wrecking ball, going for 116 total tackles (75 solo), 32.0 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, five pass deflections, one fumble recovery, one blocked field goal, and five forced fumbles. He repeated was an All-State first team honoree (Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune) and was one of five finalists (including Mique Juarez) named for the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s top linebacker. Tupai also played some rugby and did some boxing while at Murray.

Tupai is rated 4-stars by Rivals, Scout, and ESPN (grade of 81). Rivals list him as the No. 1 prospect in Utah and the No. 17 defensive end nationally, while ESPN has also has him as the No. 1 prospect in Utah and the No. 233 overall recruit for the Class of 2016. He holds scholarship offers from Arizona, BYU, Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, Utah, Utah State, Washington, Washington State, and Wisconsin. He has also been recruited by Arizona State, Michigan, Ole Miss, and Oregon. Tupai is LDS but has said that he doesn’t currently have mission plans.
