BYU Tries to Flip Utah DE Commitment and All-American Rugby Star Leki Fotu (Class of 2016)

Last Friday BYU offered a scholarship to current University of Utah commit Alexander “Leki” Fotu.   Fotu is a 6’6” 255 pound defensive end that is rated 3-stars (Scout, ESPN) and also has scholarship offers from Oklahoma State and USC.  The 2015 Deseret News 5A MVP and All-State first team member is getting late recruiting interest as he only played one season of Utah High School Football (Ziggy Ansah 2.0?).

The Tongan started his prep career at California’s San Leandro High where he was a high school All-American in rugby. Following his sophomore season he spent the summer in London training with the London Wasps. However, upon returning home to California he found some hostility from his football teammates and coaches and chose to sit football out his Junior year. This may explain why some of the recruiting services were so late on rating him. His family moved to Herriman, Utah Spring 2014 and he now preps at Herriman High School. As a senior he recorded 82 total tackles (32 solo, 50 assisted), 9.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 5 pass deflections, and 19 quarterback hurries. He also had two carries for nine yards and one reception for 24 yards and this touchdown.

Fotu gets high praise from Herriman coach Dustin Pearce, who after the state title game told the Deseret News that “He’s the best football player I’ve probably ever coached.” Fotu also plays for Herriman’s basketball team, and continues to dominate on the rugby pitch playing last season for the USA High School All-American U17 team.

Fotu is rated 2-stars by Rivals and 3-stars by ESPN (grade of 71) and Scout, who list him as the No. 25 defensive end in the West. ESPN rates him 4-stars (grade of 82). Fotu holds scholarship offers from BYU, Oklahoma State, Utah, and USC. He is also being recruited by UCLA. Fotu committed to the Utes on September 19, 2015.
