Update: Holmes “open” recruitment didn’t last very long. He committed to Iowa today (June 27, 2016).
When BYU offered a scholarship to 3-star Texas speedster Gavin Holmes (Class of 2017) In April, they opened the floodgates of recruiting for the Northwest High receiver.

The BYU offer (his sixth) was immediately followed by offers from Tulane, Utah, and Nevada, who all offered him scholarships later that same day. The next morning he picked up another offer—from Ohio—to make it five offers in less than 24 hours, and 11 total offers. He told Rivals:
“I had talked to BYU the day before, I was just talking to the receivers coach and the next day he just hit me up the next day and said ‘hey, give me a call’ and he gave me an offer,” he said. “Then immediately after that the receivers coach from Utah hit me up and told me to give him a call too and so when I did that, they offered.”
Since that flurry of scholarship offers in April, Holmes stock has continued to rise and he received 17 more offers bringing the June total to 28. Holmes committed to Duke on May 30th but then re-opened his commitment on June 16th, which will likely lead to even more scholarship offers for the talented receiver.
Holmes preps at Northwest High School (TX), where he as a junior in 2015 he had 59 receptions for 830 yards (14.1 avg) and eight touchdowns. He also rushed 10 times for 110 yards (11.0 avg) and returned three kickoffs for 69 yards (23.0 avg). As a sophomore he had 25 catches for 266 yards and a touchdown in five games before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He runs a 4.43 forty and competes in the 100, 200, and 4×100 relay for his high school track team.
Holmes is rated 3-stars by Rivals, Scout , and ESPN (grade of 77). He currently has scholarship offers from Air Force, Army, Boise State, Bowling Green, BYU, Colorado State, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Fresno State, Harvard, Iowa, Jackson State, Kansas, Middle Tennessee State, Navy, Nevada, North Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, San Diego State, Stephen F. Austin, Syracuse, Texas-San Antonio, Tulane, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Holmes is also being recruited by Arkansas State, Baylor, Colorado, Houston, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Purdue, SMU, Texas, TCU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, and West Virginia. In April he listed BYU as one of his current leaders and planned to make a visit, but also noted that “Stanford is my ultimate dream school.”
Holmes got onto BYU’s radar as a result of his training with BYU great Margin Hooks (@SkysTheLimitWR), who has built up an impressive training business in central Texas. Hooks was instrumental in BYU’s signing of Akile Davis and Micah Simon (Class of 2015), as well as several others. While BYU may still be high on his list, it is reported that Iowa is the current leader.
