Highlights for week nine in prep football include Hank Tuipulotu making 10 receptions for 218 yards and two TDs, Max Tooley with 133 yards receiving, one TD and 13 tackles, and Drew Jensen and Troy Warner each with a pick six. Here’s a quick look at how the rest of BYU’s Class of 2016 and 2017 commitments performed in week nine. Note: Next week concludes the regular season for Utah High School football.
Class of 2016 Commits (listed alphabetically)
Solofa Funa, LB/RB for Spanish Fork High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Spanish Fork (4-5) lost to Wasatch 28-20. Funa had a solid outing with six carries for 35 yards, five receptions for 62 yards, and seven tackles. Season stats (9 games): 53 carries for 291 yards, 5 TDs; 14 receptions for 173 yards, 32 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions.
Jaren Hall, QB for Maple Mountain High School (Spanish Fork, UT). The backup quarterbacks stepped up as injured Hall (ankle sprain) watched in Maple Mountain (7-2) 38-7 defeat over Payson. Season stats (8 games): 94-183 passing (53.0%) for 1336 yards, 13 TDs with 8 INT; 74 carries for 402 yards and 3 TDs.
Aleva Hifo, CB/WR for Heritage High School (Menifee, CA). Heritage (7-0) followed up last week’s 49-14 victory over Elsinore with another 49-14 victory, this time over Perris. Hifo’s stats are not yet available. Season Stats (6 games): 27 rushes for 243 yards and six TDs, 11 receptions for 289 yards and five TDs, 99 yard kickoff return for another TD, and two punts for 47 yards.
Britton Hogan, LS for Olympus High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Olympus (6-3) fell to Bountiful 21-17 largely because of Hogan’s future teammate Max Tooley (see below). Hogan registered no stats as long snapper in the game. Season stats (9 games): LS; 4 receptions for 33 yards, 3 TDs.
Drew Jensen, QB/S for Brighton High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Brighton (7-2) defeated Copper Hills 59-8 thanks to a monster effort from Stanford commit Simi Fehoko (six receptions for 198 yards and five touchdowns and an INT in one half of play). Jensen had a nice game of his own with a 40 yard pick-six. Season stats (4 games): 12-36 passing for 241 yards and 2 TD with 3 INT; 6 carries for 3 yards and 0 TDs; 11 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception for a TD.
Wayne Kirby, DT/DE for Highland High School (Pocatello, ID) de-committed from BYU following an offer from Utah.
Freddy Livai, DE for A.B. Miller High School (Fontana, CA). Miller (2-5) fell to Redlands 57-16. Livai had one 30 yard reception. Season Stats (7 games): 40 tackles (21 solo, 19 assists), 3 TFL, 9 QBH, 5 Sacks, 1 reception for 30 yards.
Atunaisa Mahe, NG/G for West Jordan High School (West Jordan, UT). West Jordan (4-4) fell to Brighton 27-24. Game stats not yet available. Season Stats (through first 6 games): 37 tackles, 3 sacks
Darius McFarland, RB/DE for Box Elder High School (UT). Box Elder (3-6) bounced back with a convincing 41-14 victory over Bonneville. McFarland’s stats are not yet available. Season stats (7 games): 58 carries for 274 yards and 5 TDs; 14 receptions fro 221 yards and two TDs; 16 tackles.
Keenan Pili, LB for Timpview High School (Provo, UT). Timpview (8-1) defeated Mountain View 28-0. Pili had eight tackles in the win. Season Stats (9 games): 50 tackles, 1 sack.
Skyler Southam, K/P/DB for Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT). Wasatch (7-2) defeated Spanish Fork 28-20. Southam had four PATs and a tackle. Season Stats (9 games); 25-26 PATs, 19-25 FGs (long of 53 yards), 51 kickoffs with 43 touchbacks; 31 punts for 1338 yards (43.2 ave); 32 tackles and 4 interceptions.
Max Tooley, S for Bountiful High School (Bountiful, UT). Bountiful (5-4) defeated Olympus 21-17. Tooley had 17 carries for 133 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown run, caught one pass for nine yards, and had 13 tackles. Season Stats (9 games): 95 carries for 488 yards and 7 TDs; 8 receptions for 35 yards; 1-2 passing for 40 yards; 63 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception.
Keaton Torre, QB for Bingham High School (South Jordan, UT). Bingham (8-1) defeated Jordan 56-42. Torre recorded no statistics for the game. Season stats (through first 6 games): 23-48 passing (.479) for 379 yards, four TDs, and 2 INT; 25 carries for 6 yards.
Jonah Trinnaman, WR for Snow College (Ephraim, UT). The #2 ranked Badgers (6-1) experienced defeat for the first time this season, falling to Eastern Arizona 37-27. Trinnaman had a 17 yard kickoff return; other statistics are not yet recorded. Season stats (6 games): 2 rush for 12 yards; 29 receptions for 497 yards receiving (18.0 ave.) and 5 TDs; 11 kickoff returns, 445 yards (40.5 ave.), 1 TD.
Hank Tuipulotu, TE for Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, SC). Nation Ford (5-3) fell 42-28 to York. Tuipulotu had 10 receptions for 218 yards (21.8 ave.) and two TDs, while his younger brother Ben had a fumble recovery and an interception. Season Stats (8 games): 4 carries for 5 yards rushing, 1 TDs; 68 receptions for 964 yards receiving, 6 TDs; seven tackles and one interception.
Troy Warner, WR/DB for Mission Hills High School (San Marcos, CA). Mission Hills (7-0) had another convincing win, this time a 47-7 victory over Rancho Buena Vista. They have beat their opponents 232-24 in their last six games. Warner had a pick six, however, full game stats are not yet available. Season Stats (first 3 games): one reception for 25 yards, 7 tackles.
Class of 2017 Commits
Jackson McChesney, RB/WR for Lone Peak High School (Alpine, UT). Lone Peak (9-0) stayed undefeated with a 37-21 win over Woods Cross. McChesney two carries for 13 yards and five receptions for 97 yards. Season stats (9 games): 39 rushes for 250 yards and 4 TDs, 26-448 receiving, 5 TDs.
