Future Cougs in High School Football: Week 8

Records fell for BYU commit Skyler Southam this week in prep football as he kicked a personal career long field goal (53 yards), tied the Utah state record of field goals in a game (5), and attained the Utah state record for field goals in a season with 20 (was previously 17). Here’s a quick look at how Southam and the rest of BYU’s Class of 2016 and 2017 commitments performed in week eight.

Class of 2016 Commits (listed alphabetically)

Solofa Funa, LB/RB for Spanish Fork High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Funa recorded his fifth rushing touchdown of the season with an 11 yard carry in Spanish Fork’s (3-4) 33-21 victory over Uintah.  Season stats (8 games): 38 carries for 207 yards, 5 TDs; 8 receptions for 77 yards, 19 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception

Jaren Hall, QB for Maple Mountain High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Hall had a rough weekend as he sprained his ankle at the opening of the second half in Maple Mountain’s 22-9 lost to Wasatch.  Season stats (7 games): 94-178 passing (52.8%) for 1299 yards, 13 TDs with 8 INT; 69 carries for 387 yards and 3 TDs.

Aleva Hifo, CB/WR for Heritage High School (Menifee, CA). Heritage (6-0) had a 49-14 victory over Elsinore.  Hifo had a monster game with two touchdown runs and a 30-yard touchdown reception. He currently leads the area in yards per catch with 23.8.  Season Stats (5 games): 25 rushes for 216 yards and seven TDs, nine receptions for 248 yards and five TDs, 99 yard kickoff return for another TD.

Britton Hogan, LS for Olympus High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Olympus (6-2) defeated Murray 33-22.  Season stats (7 games): LS; 4 receptions for 33 yards, 3 TDs.

Drew Jensen, QB/S for Brighton High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Brighton (6-2) defeated West Jordan 27-24.  Jensen is getting eased back into the offense after spending most of the season with a PCL injury.  He went 2-4 passing for 49 yards and also had three tackles.  Season stats (4 games): 12-36 passing for 241 yards and 2 TD with 3 INT; 6 carries for 3 yards and 0 TDs; 11 tackles, 1 sack.

Wayne Kirby, DT/DE for Highland High School (Pocatello, ID). Highland (6-1) defeated Skyline 26-13. Kirby recorded a sack early in the game and other stats are not yet available.

Freddy Livai, DE for A.B. Miller High School (Fontana, CA). Miller (3-3) defeated Redlands East Valley 45-12.  Stats not yet available.  Season Stats (5 games): 40 tackles (21 solo, 19 assists), 3 TFL, 9 QBH, 5 Sacks

Atunaisa Mahe, NG/G for West Jordan High School (West Jordan, UT). West Jordan (4-4) fell to Brighton 27-24. Game stats not yet available. Season Stats (through first 6 games): 37 tackles, 3 sacks

Darius McFarland, RB/DE for Box Elder High School (UT). Box Elder (2-6) was defeated by East 36-15. McFarland’s stats are not yet available.  Season stats (7 games): 58 carries for 274 yards and 5 TDs; 14 receptions fro 221 yards and two TDs; 16 tackles.

Keenan Pili, LB for Timpview High School (Provo, UT). Timpview (7-1) defeated Corner Canyon 28-20.  Pili had nine tackles in the win. Season Stats (8 games): 41 tackles, 1 sack.

Skyler Southam, K/P/DB for Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT). Wasatch (6-2) rebounded from last weeks loss to beat Maple Mountain 22-7.  Southam had a historic night in which he kicked his way into the Utah record books.  His five field goals ties as a Utah State record while his season total of 20 field goals easily surpasses the previous record of 17.  He also tied a career long with a 53-yarder and had three tackles.  Season Stats (8 games); 21-22 PATs, 20-25 FGs (long of 53 yards), 47 kickoffs with 36 touchbacks; 27 punts for 1146 yards (42.4 ave); 31  tackles and 4 interceptions.

Max Tooley, S for Bountiful High School (Bountiful, UT). Bountiful (4-4) defeated Bonneville 41-21.  Tooley had a 32-yard touchdown run.  Other stats have not yet been recorded.  Season Stats (7 games): 78 carries for 355 yards and 5 TDs; 7 receptions for 26 yards; 1-2 passing for 40 yards; 50 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception.

Keaton Torre, QB for Bingham High School (South Jordan, UT). Bingham (7-1) pitched its second consecutive shutout, blanking Taylorsville 38-0.  They have allowed only six points total in their last four games and have five total shutouts on the season. Torre recorded no statistics for the game.  Season stats (through first 6 games): 23-48 passing (.479) for 379 yards, four TDs, and 2 INT; 25 carries for 6 yards.

Jonah Trinnaman, WR for Snow College (Ephraim, UT). The #2 ranked Badgers (6-0) squeaked by New Mexico Military 38-37.  Trinnaman had a quiet night with two catches for 12 yards and took a break from kick return duties.  Season stats (6 games): 2 rush for 12 yards; 29 receptions for 497 yards receiving (18.0 ave.) and 5 TDs; 11 kickoff returns, 445 yards (40.5 ave., 2nd in NJCAA), 1 TD.

Hank Tuipulotu, TE for Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, SC). Nation Ford (5-2) had a 49-27 victory over cross town rival Fort Mill. Tuipulotu game stats not yet available.  Season Stats (7 games): 4 carries for 5 yards rushing, 1 TDs; 54 receptions for 697 yards receiving, 6 TDs; five tackles and one interception.

Troy Warner, WR/DB for Mission Hills High School (San Marcos, CA).  Mission Hills (6-0) defeated Oceanside 45-0.   They have beat their opponents 185-17 in their last five games. Warner had an 87-yard touchdown reception in his first game back after suspension. Full game stats are not yet available.  Season Stats (first 3 games): one reception for 25 yards, 7 tackles.

Class of 2017 Commits

Jackson McChesney, RB/WR for Lone Peak High School (Alpine, UT). Lone Peak (8-0) stayed undefeated with a 38-13 win over Lehi. McChesney had a 49-yard touchdown reception to go with four carries for 36 yards three receptions for another 67.  Season stats (8 games): 37 rushes for 237 yards and 4 TDs, 21-351 receiving, 5 TDs.
