Future Cougs in High School Football: Week 4

Week 4 for High School football 2015 is now in the books. It was a great week for several BYU commits.  Keaton Torre–BYU’s newest commit–had two touchdown passes for #1 (5A) ranked Bingham while Class of 2017 commit Jackson McChesney had a touchdown catch and a touchdown run for #4 (5A) ranked Lone Peak.  Keenan Pili had six tackles to help #1 (4A) ranked Timpview stay undefeated.  Other standout prep performances came from Hank Tuipulotu (two touchdown receptions and his first interception on the season), Aleva Hifo (80 yard touchdown run), Darius McFarland (47 yard touchdown reception), and Skyler Southam (31 yard field goal and five PATs).

BYU’s lone Junior College commit, Jonah Trinnaman had a phenomenal game, catching three passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and returning two kicks for 74 more yards in Snow College’s victory over Western Arizona. The opposing QB in that game was Trent Hosick, the former BYU commit from Missouri.  He went 10-15 for 171 yards, zero touchdowns and two picks, and had -9 yards rushing.

Here’s a quick look at how all BYU’s Class of 2016 (and 2017) commitments did.

Class of 2016 Commits (listed alphabetically)

Solofa Funa, LB/RB for Spanish Fork High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Spanish Fork defeated local rivals Salem Hills 21-14 to go to 3-1 on the season. Games stats are not yet available but another Funa was the star of this one, as freshman phenom Mace had a pick six. Season stats (through first three games): 22 rushes for 116 yards, 3 TD; 14 tackles, 1 interception

Jaren Hall, QB for Maple Mountain High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Maple Mountain suffered their first loss in a nail-biter to Springville 13-14, falling to 3-1 on the season. Hall went 18-33 for 183 yards and two touchdowns passing, and had 11 carries for -1 yard. Season stats (4 games): 68-123 passing for 865 yards, 10 TDs with 6 INT; 41 carries for 239 yards and 2 TDs.

Aleva Hifo, CB/WR for Heritage High (Menifee, CA). The Heritage Patriots defeated LaQuinta 34-16 to go to 3-0 and is now ranked #1 in the CIF-SS Inland Division Rankings. Hifo had another big game with an 80 yard touchdown run. Season Stats (3 games, incomplete): one 33 yard TD reception, one kickoff return TD, one 80 yard TD run.

Britton Hogan, LS for Olympus High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Olympus defeated Northridge 41-31 to even its record at 2-2. Hogan didn’t record any statistics. Season stats: none

Drew Jensen, QB/S for Brighton High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Brighton beat Cottonwood 24-6 to stay undefeated thus far this season (4-0). Jensen is out for the remainder of the season with a PCL injury. Season stats (1 game): 8-24 passing (.333) for 142 yards and 1 TD with 3 INT; 6 carries for 3 yards and 0 TDs.

Wayne Kirby, DT/DE for Highland High School (Pocatello, ID). The Highland Rams continued to dominate their competition with a 52-6 victory over Century to go to 3-0. They are now ranked #2 in the Idaho 5A rankings. Kirby’s stats for the game are not yet available. Season stats (3 games, incomplete): 7 tackles, 1 FF, 1 FR, 3 sacks

Connor Harding (BYU Basketball commit) is a teammate of Kirby and is the starting Quarterback for Highland. He threw 14-26 for 270 yards and four TDs on the night.

Freddy Livai, DE for A.B. Miller High School (Fontana, CA). Miller fell to Summit 49-28.  Game stats not yet available.

Atunaisa Mahe, NG/G for West Jordan High School (West Jordan, UT). West Jordan was defeated 57-14 by Bingham to drop to 2-2. Season Stats (4 games): No statistics

Darius McFarland, DE for Box Elder High School (UT). The Bees lost 41-7 to Herriman to fall to 1-3. McFarland had the lone touchdown for Box Elder on a 47 yard reception. He had six carries for 10 yards. Season stats (4 games, incomplete): 3 rushing TDs, 2 receiving TD.

Keenan Pili, LB for Timpview High School (Provo, UT). Timpview defeated Alta 35-14 to go to 3-1. Pili had six tackles in the win. Season Stats (4 games): 21 tackles, 1 sack.

Skyler Southam, K for Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT). Wasatch defeated Skyline 38-16 to get to 3-1. Southam had another solid game with a 31-yard field goal and five PATs. Season Stats (3 games); 11-11 PATs, 9-9 FGs (long of 46 yards).

Keaton Torre, QB for Bingham High School (South Jordan, UT). The newest BYU commit led the Bingham Miners to a dominating 57-14 win over West Jordan and is now 3-1 on the season.  They are also ranked #1 in Utah and #17 on the USA Today #Super 25 computer rankings. Torre had two touchdown passes in the game.  Season stats (3 games, incomplete): 13-21 passing for 263 yards, four TDs, and 1 INT.

Jonah Trinnaman, WR for Snow College (Ephraim, UT). The Badgers defeated Arizona Western 35-10 and is now 2-0.  Trinnaman was the star of the game with 3 receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two kick returns for 74 yards.  Season stats (2 games): 1 rush, -6 yards, 0 TDs; 11-189 receiving, 3 TD; 4 kickoff returns, 112 yards.

Hank Tuipulotu, TE for Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, SC). Nation Ford had another dominating shutout win, this time a 55-0 victory over Greenville, to get to 3-1 on the season. Tuipulotu had another standout game, finishing with nine catches for 133 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Season Stats (3 games): 2-6 rushing, 1 TDs; 25-338 receiving, 3 TDs, one INT.

Class of 2017 Commits

Jackson McChesney, RB/WR for Lone Peak High School (Alpine, UT). Lone Peak stayed undefeated (4-0) with another dominating performance, this time a 44-7 victory over Pleasant Grove. McChesney had a fantastic game, rushing four times for 42 yards (10.5 yards/carry) and a touchdown, and catching two passes for another 42 yards (21 yards/catch) and a touchdown. Season stats (3 games): 22 rushes for 131 yards and 3 TDs, 13-204 receiving, 3 TDs.
