Several future Cougs played their last High School football games this week in the first round of the Utah state playoffs while most of the out-of-staters are preparing to play their regular season finales this upcoming weekend. Here’s a quick look at how BYU’s Class of 2016 and 2017 commitments performed last week.
Class of 2016 Commits (listed alphabetically)
Solofa Funa, LB/RB for Spanish Fork High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Spanish Fork (5-6) fell to East in the first round of the Utah state playoffs 63-6.. Statistics not yet available. Season stats (10 games): 67 carries for 357 yards, 5 TDs; 20 receptions for 243 yards, 38 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 interceptions.
Jaren Hall, QB for Maple Mountain High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Maple Mountain (7-4) dropped the Region 8 play-in game to Salem Hills 7-6 and was eliminated from the Utah state playoffs. Hall sat with an ankle injury. Season stats (8 games): 94-183 passing (53.0%) for 1336 yards, 13 TDs with 8 INT; 74 carries for 402 yards and 3 TDs.
Aleva Hifo, CB/WR for Heritage High School (Menifee, CA). Heritage (9-0) continued its winning ways with a 42-35 victory over rival Paloma Valley. Hifo’s stats are not yet available. Season Stats (8 games): 32 rushes for 274 yards and six TDs, 15 receptions for 431 yards and eight TDs, two kickoff returns for 120 yards including a 99 yard kickoff return for another TD, and two punts for 47 yards. Heritage faces Lakeside on November 6th for its last regular season game.
Britton Hogan, LS for Olympus High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Olympus (7-4) fell 27-0 to Corner Canyon in the first round of the Utah state playoffs. Hogan registered no stats as long snapper in the game. Season stats (11 games): LS; 4 receptions for 33 yards, 3 TDs.
Drew Jensen, QB/S for Brighton High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Brighton (7-4) was eliminated by Herriman in the first round of the Utah state playoffs, 49-17. Jensen had one reception for eight yards and four tackles in the loss. Season stats (5 games): 12-36 passing for 241 yards and 2 TD with 3 INT; 6 carries for 3 yards and 0 TDs; one reception for eight yards; 15 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception for a TD.
Freddy Livai, DE for A.B. Miller High School (Fontana, CA). Miller (2-7) lost 55-20 to Carter. Livai had three tackles (two solo, one assisted). Season Stats (9 games): 63 tackles (27 solo, 36 assists), 3 TFL, 12 QBH, 1 pass deflection, 6 Sacks, 1 reception for 30 yards. Miller will face Cajon on November 6th in their last regular season game.
Atunaisa Mahe, NG/G for West Jordan High School (West Jordan, UT). West Jordan (5-5) was eliminated in the first round of the Utah state playoffs after falling 53-6 to Lone Peak. Game stats not yet available. Season Stats (through first 9 games): 44 tackles, 4 sacks.
Darius McFarland, RB/DE for Box Elder High School (UT). Box Elder (5-8) had an exciting weekend as they defeated Bonneville 7-0 to advance to a second play-in game where they defeated Woods Cross 21-14. They were then eliminated as the fell to Springville 28-20 in their first round playoff game. McFarland played both ways and had three receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown and four tackles and a sack in the Woods Cross game. Against Springville he had one rush for seven yards, one reception for eleven yards, and two tackles, Season stats (13 games): 69 carries for 321 yards and 5 TDs; 20 receptions fro 299 yards and four TDs; 31 tackles, 1 sack.
Keenan Pili, LB for Timpview High School (Provo, UT). Timpview (9-1) def eated Skyline 54-14 in the first round of the Utah state playoffs. Pili had three tackles in the win. Season Stats (10 games): 53 tackles, 1 sack. Timpview will face Bountiful on November 6th at 4:00 p.m.
Skyler Southam, K/P/DB for Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT). Wasatch (8-3) fell to Bountiful 42-17 in the first round of the state playoffs. Southam had a 28 yard field goal and two PATs. Season Stats (11 games); 33-34 PATs (97% completion), 20-26 FGs (long of 53 yards) for 76.9% completion, 62 kickoffs for 4524 yards, with 56 touchbacks; 34 punts for 1496 yards (44.0 ave); 37 tackles and 4 interceptions.
Wayne Taulapapa, RB for Punahou High School (Honolulu, HI). Punahou (8-2) ended their season last week with a 27-23 loss to St. Louis. Season Stats (10 games): 180 carries for 1107 yards (6.2 average) and 18 touchdowns, nine receptions for 59 yards (6.5 ave.).
Max Tooley, S for Bountiful High School (Bountiful, UT). Bountiful (6-4) upset Wasatch in first round action 42-17. Tooley had two touchdown runs, including a 92 yard run in the first quarter. He finished with nine carries for 182 yards and two TDs, and one reception for seven yards. Season Stats (11 games): 144 carries for 1060 yards and 11 TDs; 13 receptions for 69 yards; 1-2 passing for 40 yards; 80 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception. Bountiful will face Timpview Friday in the second round of the Utah state playoffs.
Keaton Torre, QB for Bingham High School (South Jordan, UT). Bingham (9-1) defeated American Fork 22-6 in their first round of the Utah state playoffs. Game statistics are not yet available. Season stats (through first 6 games): 23-48 passing (.479) for 379 yards, four TDs, and 2 INT; 25 carries for 6 yards; one reception for 10 yards. Bingham faces Mountain Crest in the second round on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Jonah Trinnaman, WR for Snow College (Ephraim, UT). Snow College (8-1) defeated New Mexico Military Institute in the semifinal game of the WSFL Playoffs. Trinnaman had a 23 yard first quarter touchdown reception and then had a touchdown pass of his own on a trick play in the fourth quarter. He finished with 98 yards receiving, one kick return for 28 yards, and one rush for eight yards. Season stats (9 games): 5 carries for 38 yards; 41 receptions for 693 yards receiving (16.9 ave.) and 7 TDs; 16 kickoff returns for 547 yards (34.2 ave.), 1 TD; one tackle. Snow will take on Pima in the WSFL championship game on November 7.
Hank Tuipulotu, TE for Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, SC). Nation Ford (6-4) defeated Clover 56-20. Tuipulotu had eight receptions for 140 yards (17.5 ave). Season Stats (10 games): 4 carries for 5 yards rushing, 1 TDs; 82 receptions for 1234 yards receiving (15.0 ave.), 7 TDs; seven tackles and one interception. Ford will face Rock Hill on November 6th in their final regular season game.
Troy Warner, WR/DB for Mission Hills High School (San Marcos, CA). Mission Hills (9-0) defeated Vista 47-21. Game stats are not yet available. Season Stats (first 3 games): one reception for 25 yards, 7 tackles. Mission Hills will face rival San Marcos Friday in their last regular season game.
Class of 2017 Commits
Jackson McChesney, RB/WR for Lone Peak High School (Alpine, UT). Lone Peak (11-0) continued to roll defeating West Jordan 53-6 in the first round of the Utah state playoffs. McChesney had a big game with two carries for nine yards and a touchdown and two receptions for 27 yards and another score. Season stats (11 games): 44 rushes for 267 yards and 5 TDs; 32 receptions for 496 yards, 6 TDs. Lone Peak will play Roy Friday night at 4:00 p.m.
