Future Cougs in High School Football: Week 1

High School football kicked off this weekend. Here’s a quick look at how BYU’s Class of 2016 (and 2017) commitments did.

Class of 2016 Commits

Solona Funa, LB for Spanish Fork High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Spanish Fork kicked the season off with a 27-9 victory over Mountain View. Coach Jordan Smith singled out Funa for his exceptional play on both sides of the ball. Statistics are not yet available.

Jaren Hall, QB for Maple Mountain High School (Spanish Fork, UT). Maple Mountain kicked off the 2015 season with a non-region victory over Woods Cross, 21-18. Jaren passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and added another rushing touchdown. Season stats (1 game): 16-26 passing (.615) for 173 yards, 2 TDs with 0 INT; 8 carries for 32 yards and 1 TD.

Aleva Hifo, CB/WR for Heritage High (Menifee, CA). Heritage starts their season next week with a road game vs. Great Oak (Temecula, CA).

Britton Hogan, LS for Olympus High School (Salt Lake City, UT). Olympus won their nonregion opener against Cottonwood, 33-14. Hogan didn’t record any statistics.

Drew Jensen, QB/S for Brighton (Salt Lake City, UT). While Jensen struggled in the passing game (8-24 for 142 yards and 1 TD against 3 picks), Brighton still walked away with a nonregion victory against Herriman in their season opener, 23-14. Jensen completed eight passes for 142 yards and one touchdown, with three interceptions. Season stats (1 game): 8-24 passing (.333) for 142 yards and 1 TD with 3 INT; 6 carries for 3 yards and 0 TDs.

Wayne Kirby, DT/DE for Highland High School (Pocatello, ID). The Highland Rams start their season next week when they travel down to American Fork to take on the Cavemen (August 29).

Freddy Livai, DE for A.B. Miller High School (Fontana, CA). The A.B. Miller Rebels don’t kick off until next Friday when they face Barstow in their home opener.

Atunaisa Mahe, NG/G for West Jordan High School (West Jordan, UT). The Beetdiggers lost their nonregion season opener to Juan Diego, 43-33. Mahe recorded no statistics.

Darius McFarland, DE for Box Elder High School (UT). The Bees lost a double overtime thriller in their nonregion opener to Logan, 38-37. While defensive statistics have not yet been posted, McFarland did have one carry for a two yard touchdown.

Skyler Southam, K for Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT). Wasatch beat Ogden 33-14 in their non-region season opener. Skyler started the season strong with three PATs and 2/2 on field goals from 22 and 33 yards, accounting for nine of Wasatch’s points.

Jonah Trinnaman, WR for Snow College (Ephraim, UT). The Badgers kick off their season next Saturday vs. the Mesa Community College.

Hank Tuipulotu, TE for Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, SC). Nation Ford lost its home opener to the South Pointe Stallions 30-7.  Tuipulotu had one rush for three yards and four receptions for 42 yards. Season Stats (1 game): 1-3 rushing, 0 TDs; 4-42 receiving, 0 TDs.

Class of 2017 Commits

Jackson McChesney, RB/WR for Lone Peak High School (Alpine, UT). Lone Peak started their season off right with a dominating 31-0 victory over non-region foe Bountiful. The new BYU recruit McChesney had a great game with a 5-yard touchdown catch which followed a 30 yard reception on the same drive. Detailed statistics for the game not yet available.
