Pau’u prepped at Servite High School (CA), where he started for three years. As a senior he was named the Trinity League Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-Orange County for the second year in a row. He also played on Servite’s basketball and tennis teams.
Pau’u was rated 3-stars by Rivals who ranked him No. 20 nationally for inside linebackers and as the No. 51 recruit in California. Scout also rated him 3-stars and ranked him the No. 3 middle linebacker in the west and No. 21 nationally. In their analysis they note that “Pound for pound, there may not be a better linebacker in the West than Pauu. He’s a big time hitter, sheds his blocks tremendously well and makes every tackle.” ESPN rated him 4-stars (grade of 79) and ranked him the No. 15 Inside Linebacker nationally. Pau’u held scholarship offers from BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Iowa State, Nebraska, Oregon State, and Washington. He was also recruited by Duke, Minnesota, Missouri, Notre Dame, Oregon, Pennsylvania, UCLA, USC, Utah, and Washington State. Pau’u committed to the Cougars on June 29, 2011 after attending a BYU’s junior day with close friend Jherremya Leuta-Douyere, who also commited to BYU.
