Jamal Aytes (pronounced “eights”) is a 6’6″ 225 pound forward for the BYU basketball team (Class of 2015).
He played High School basketball at Foothill Christian (2009-11) and JSerra Catholic (2011-13) where he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a Senior. He was named to the All-CIF Southern Division 4AA team and was named MVP at the Adidas Exclusive Run. He had offers to play for Boston College, BYU, Kansas State, Miami, and Gonzaga, West Virginia, and UNLV.
He played his first year of collegiate basketball at UNLV where he appeared in four games for the 2013-14 Rebels, averaging 2.8 points in 9.3 minutes per game. He decided mid-season to transfer to BYU. Due to NCAA transfer rules he won’t be eligible to play for the Cougars until December 20, 2014. Unfortunately, due to ankle surgery Aytes is likely out until April or March 2015.
