Getting to know incoming BYU football commit, Will Zundel (WR, Class of 2021)

Will Zundel is a BYU football commit for the Class of 2021, making a verbal commitment on January 14, 2021.

Zundel is a 6-foot-5 220 pound receiver that prepped at American Fork High School (American Fork, Utah).  In seven games as a senior he had 20 receptions for 433 yards (21.7 avg) and three touchdowns. He also returned one kickoff 98 yards for a score and one punt return for 5 yards (MaxPreps). He has improved on his 4.6 forty, 260 pound bench, and 380 pound squat (HUDL) with a reported 4.49 forty, 315 bench, and 5 squat reps at 350.

Zundel had a lot of interest in his recruiting and ended up turning down a scholarship offer to Southern Virginia to join BYU as a preferred walk-on.  Zundel will serve an LDS mission in Luanda, Angola and return to join the team for the 2023 season.

I caught up with Zundel to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Zundel:  Because I have a long family history at the school.  My parents went there, my grandfather taught there, and I have plenty of relatives that attended and/or played sports at BYU.  BYU has always been a goal of mine and I have been working to be there and play there since I was a kid.  With those years of constant work to get where I am, I felt like a perfect fit at BYU.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Zundel:  I talked with plenty of other schools from around the country.  Some big, some small.  I definitely got the most love from BYU, especially during the season.  I received constant texts, graphics, and videos before my games each week.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Zundel:  My favorite movie is The Emperor’s New Groove.  My favorite book is the Book of Mormon.  My favorite band has to be the Bee Gees, and I love any music I can sing along to.  My favorite breakfast cereal is Malt-O-Meal brand Coco Crispies.

BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?

Zundel:  We upset the no.1 seed as the 16th seed in the state playoffs.

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Zundel:  “You can do anything you put your mind to.”  I also love “act with positive discontent” meaning you are happy with where you are and what you have done, but you know you can work to be better.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?

Zundel:  Tom Brady.  Nothing can stand in his way.  Physically and as a player I seek to emulate DK Metcalf.

BYU Insider: Is there anything else you’d like Cougarfans to know about you?

Zundel:  I’m a preferred walk-on but I intend to work hard and receive a scholarship soon after I start playing.  I leave July 12th 2021 on my mission to Luanda, Angola.  Finally, I plan to work nonstop to be the best football player and best person I can be.  Cougar Nation, you will know my name.
