High School. Gunther prepped at Lone Peak High School (Cedar Hills, Utah), where in two seasons at quarterback he went 244-for-404 (.604) for 3,589 yards and 45 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He also rushed 203 times in his career for 1353 yards and 12 more scores (MaxPreps). He led the Knights to a 13-1 record with the only loss coming in the state finals.
Recruitment. Gunther had a scholarship offer to Snow College and preferred walk-on offers from Utah State, Weber State and Dartmouth, with interest from SUU and Duke. He committed to BYU as a preferred walk-on on February 2, 2016.
