I caught up with Maiava to ask him about his recruiting.
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Maiava: I am a member of the church and BYU recruited me the hardest. Also, Coach Grimes and Coach Arod run a similar offense to my offense at SJC. Coach Arod was the first QB coach that ever came to my school to see me. The coaches sealed the deal once they convinced my grandfather (my mom’s dad) to let me go to BYU. My whole mom’s side of the family are a bunch of die-hard Utah Utes fans (my mom’s brother Nai Fotu played for the Utes). After Coach Sitake talked to my grandpa (and Nai), grandpa ended up calling my mom and told her he felt I needed to go to BYU.
BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Maiava: Liberty, Utah, Utah State, Virginia, Purdue, Michigan, Princeton and Yale
BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Maiava: I love the movies Apocalypto and 10,000 BC. For music it’s listening to island vibes (fiji, Jboog, spawnbreezie, sammy j, sione toki, Na drua, Kiwini Vaitai, Rebel Souljahz). I like reading the The Son of Neptune series and eating Shredded Wheat with the sugar on the top of them.
BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?
Maiava: getting a free college education!!
BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Maiava: When my mom or dad need to correct me they always talk to me and give me advice on how to be better.
BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Maiava: Marcus Mariota or McKenzie Milton
