High School. Maiava prepped at St. John’s College High School (Washington D.C.), where he led the national powerhouse to a 9-1 finish and a no. 13 national ranking in 2018. Started as a freshman and sophomore at Kahuku high school in Hawaii (MaxPreps). Was named the offensive MVP of the Polynesian Bowl.
Recruitment. Maiava was rated 3-stars by 247Sports (0.8521), who rated him the no. 9 overall prospect from Washington D.C., and the no. 32 dual threat quarterback nationally in the Class of 2020. He held scholarship offers from BYU, Fresno State, Hawaii, Liberty, Michigan, Oregon, Purdue, Utah, Utah State, and Virginia with recruiting interest from Penn State and Washington. Maiava committed to BYU on June 16, 2019.
