High School. Willis prepped at Newtown high school (Sandy Hook, Connecticut), where he played on both the offensive and defensive lines (MaxPreps). He was First-Team All-State, team captain, and threw shot put for the track and field team.

Recruitment. Willis was rated 2-stars by 247Sports (0.7817), who rated him the no. 16 overall prospect from Connecticut in the Class of 2017.  He held scholarship offers from Bucknell, Central Connecticut State, Delaware State, and Fordham and saw recruiting interest from Boston College, UCONN, UMass, and Wake Forest. Willis committed to BYU on June 28, 2016.
