Next Wednesday (February 2nd) is the Division I final signing date for the football Class of 2022. Most of BYU’s class was signed during the early signing period in December, but there are a few spots that still need to be filled.
Of course, the biggest question mark is where will USC quarterback Jaxson Dart call home? Up until a week or so ago Ole Miss and Oklahoma seemed the likely targets. But rumors now have BYU, TCU, and USC back in the mix.
Dart’s girlfriend recently followed several Ole Miss players and coaches on Instagram. That may or may not be an indication of where Dart is headed, but it’s certainly not a good sign for BYU. Dart and USC teammate TE Michael Trigg recently took a visit to Ole Miss and seemed to have a good time. They have expressed interest in being a package deal and Trigg to BYU seems unlikely.
Fortunately, the Cougs already have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Jaren Hall, and a highly recruited backup in Jacob Conover. Landing Dart would be incredible, but it’s not a make or break deal for the Cougs.
So, who else is in play?
January Roundup
In the last week or so BYU has made scholarship or PWO offers to Porter Small (@PorterSmall54), Cruz Estrada (@CruzEstrada07), Jett White (@G6Arron), Carlton Johnson (@carlton_ceejaay), Caleb Lomu (@CalebLomu51), Korbyn Green (@KorbynGreen), Weston Port (@PortWeston), Carson Tujague (@CarsonTujague), Dom Henry (@Dom1Henry), and Roman Rashada (@romanrashada_).
Here’s a quick breakdown for each of these recruits:
Porter Small is 6-foot-4 235 pound edge rusher that preps at Springville high school (home of fellow Coug recruit Dallin Johnson). The 3-star recruit was recently named the All-Valley defensive MVP and All-State first team. Small has interest from Southern Utah, Utah, and Weber State.
Cruz Estrada is a 6-foot-0 190 pound athlete that preps at Mater Dei high school (Chula Vista, CA). The 2023 recruit had one carry for 48 yards, 30 receptions for 756 yards and six touchdowns, and four kickoff returns and four solo tackles as a junior. He got his first FBS offer from BYU this week.
Arron “Jett” White is currently a class of 2025 commit to USC, but the recruitment of this freshman is just starting to heat up. In 2021 the 6-foot-2 inch 160 pound athlete had 35 tackles, three interceptions with one returned for a touchdown, and five total touchdowns. He is currently committed to USC and has offers from Arizona, ASU, Boston College, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Penn State, and Utah.
Carlton Johnson is a 6-foot-1 170 pound JUCO transfer with two years of eligibility. The wide receiver started at Southern Utah where he was a Freshman All-American and led the team with three interceptions. Last season at Riverside CC in six games he had 45 tackles (34 solo) with two interceptions returned for touchdowns. He has offers from BYU, Fresno State, Mass, and UNLV.
Caleb Lomu is a 6-foot-5 255 pound offensive lineman that preps at Highland high school in Gilbert, Arizona (class of 2023). The 3-star recruit has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Northern Arizona, UNLV, and Washington.
Korbyn Green is a 6-foot-1 170 pound defensive back that preps at Owasso high school in Owasso, Oklahoma. The 3-star recruit has offers from a few small schools and interest from Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, and TCU. BYU is his first FBS offer. Green runs a 4.4 forty and 10.7 100 meter.
Weston Port is a 6-foot-2 210 pound outside linebacker and tight end that preps at San Juan Hills (San Juan Capistrano, CA). Only a freshman (class of 2025), Port had 91 tackles, 12 sacks, and 25 tackles for loss in 2021 and was recently named to the MaxPreps All-America first-team, All-League first-team, and was his team’s defensive Player of the Year. He is not yet rated but already has offers from Arizona, BYU, Colorado State, Florida State, Georgia, Liberty, Louisville, Michigan, Oregon State, Pitt, Texas A&M, UNLV, Utah, and Virginia Tech.
Carson Tujague is a 6-foot-4 inch 225 pound outside linebacker and tight end that preps at Western Albemarie (Crozet, VA). The 3-star recruit has offers from FIU, Navy, and several smaller schools, with interest from Utah, Virginia, and Utah State. With his father being retained by Virginia you have to think that they are the front-runners to land Tujague’s services.
Dom Henry is a 5-foot-11 180 pound wide receiver from St. Augustine, Florida. The 3-star recruit led Florida in receiving yards (1590) and had 16 touchdowns as a senior. He has offers from Air Force, Army, and several smaller schools. Henry has a 37-inch vertical and runs a 4.46 forty time.
Roman Rashada is a 6-foot-1 195 pound cornerback that is looking for a new home as a JUCO transfer from Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill, CA). The 3-star recruit has offers from BYU, Hampton, and Washington, with interest from Tennessee. Rashada has a 37-inch vertical and runs a 4.48 forty time.
