BYU commits Ryder Burton, Landen Chambers, and Leo Pulalasi led the way in prep football Week 9 while defensive tackle Dallin Johnson and kicker Will Walker also had big games.
Ryder Burton (QB, Springville HS, Utah)
Ryder Burton has been heating up over the last few weeks. Friday he had another huge game, throwing for 300+ yards and five touchdowns in Springville’s dominating 49-14 win over Salem Hills.
Some may have felt that Burton took a step back this season because he didn’t have the eye-popping statistics he had a year ago. When I asked him about that, he told me there is only one stat he cares about—“wins!” Burton isn’t worried about what others think or how many passes he throws or completes each week. His focus is on getting the next W and in leading his team to another deep playoff run.
Burton is no. 7 in the state in passing, just 400 yards behind the 5A leader, but on roughly half the attempts. He leads the state in yards per attempt and in touchdown to interception ratio.
Landen Chambers (RB, Fossil Ridge HS, Texas)
Texas running back Landen Chambers had another huge performance over the weekend. He rushed 20 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and had three receptions for 63 yards and one more score. After the game he learned he broke the career rushing yards record at Fossil Ridge. Asked what it the game meant to him, Chambers responded:
“It means a lot to even come close to 300 yds, I have to thank the guys up front like LaJuan Owens and Senon Chapple and our coaches for making sure the OL is ready to go. The main focus now is how can I help my team get to the playoffs!!!”
Despite their 3-3 record, Fossil Ridge is still a top contender in their district. They are expected to make the playoffs where they hope to make a deep run.
Leo Pulalasi (ATH, Lakes HS, Washington)
Lakes High School do-everything athlete Leo Pulalasi continued on his record-breaking pace this weekend, going for another four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving). He also had a two-point conversion and a 25-yard punt.
Dallin Johnson (DT, Springville HS, Utah)
While Burton has been leading the Springville offense, junior defensive tackle Dallin Johnson has anchored the defense. This week he had five tackles (three solo), with two tackles for loss, one sack, two quarterback hurries, and two pass breakups.
Will Walker (K/P, Riverton HS, Utah)
Sophomore kicker Will Walker had five punts for 179 yards in Riverton’s 38-13 victory over Mountain Ridge.
