Springville made it to the 5A state title game. Small was named the All-Valley defensive MVP, first-team All-State, and the Region 9 defensive line MVP. Small is rated 3-stars by 247Sports. He holds scholarship offers from Dixie State, Southern Utah, and Weber State, with interest from Utah. He is planning on serving an LDS mission starting this summer and will join the Cougs as a preferred walk-on for the 2024 football season.
I caught up with Small to ask him about his recruiting.
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Small: BYU is not only my dream school and a fantastic P5 program, it also has an amazing spirit. Being on campus and feeling the love of coaches and players sealed it for me. The honor code, the high academics and the love and style of coaching are exactly what I want out of a college experience.
BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Small: I had scholarship offers from Weber State, SUU, Dixie State, and Snow College
BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Small: Inception and Dune (movies), Hunger Games (book), The Brook and the Bluff and Dirty Heads (bands), and Captain Crunch
BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?
Small: Even though we lost, making it to the state championship game with my best friends (he also noted that one of his great accomplishments in life was surviving Jr. High 😊).
BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Small: The life you want is on the other side of the things you don’t want to do
BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Small: Miles Garrett (defensive end for the Cleveland Browns)
