Getting to know new BYU signee, DB Nathaniel Gillis (Class of 2022)

Nathaniel Gillis committed and signed to the BYU football program (Class of 2022) on national signing day (February 2, 2022), announcing his commitment Tuesday via Twitter:

Gillis is a 6-foot-2 170 pound defensive back and wide receiver that preps at Steel Canyon High School (Spring Valley, CA), where as a senior he had two carries for seven yards, 13 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown, 44 tackles (28 solo), with four passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and three interceptions (MaxPreps). He was named to the All-League first-team on defense (East County Sports).

Gillis is a 3-star recruit by 247 sports (82) that will join the Cougars on scholarship for the 2022 season.  He was recruited as a defensive back and reported runs a 4.42 forty.

I caught up with Gillis to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Gillis:  I felt wanted here.  That instead of simply joining a school I was actually joining a family.  I feel I can be very focused out here, and the way BYU’s football is set up I can reach my full potential on the field.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Gillis:  I was getting interest from a few D2 and JUCO schools.  Washington State showed a little interest.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Gillis:  R&B music and I love marshmallow Lucky Charms

BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?
Gillis:  Making the Grossmont league first-team defense

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Gillis:  Jalen Ramsey
