Getting to know incoming BYU football grad transfer, DL Mufi Hunt (Class of 2021)

Hunt is a 6-foot-6 255 pound defensive tackle that spent two years at the University of Utah and three years at Michigan State.  After not playing last season as a tight end at the U, he entered the transfer portal (December 22, 2020) and has joined BYU as a graduate transfer.  Due to the COVID waiver he has one final year of eligibility to spend at BYU.

Hunt is no stranger to “transfers”.  He was born in Pago Pago, American Samoa, attended three different high schools in Utah, went to Virginia on a church mission, and has now attended three different universities.

At Utah Hunt appeared in two games in 2019 and recorded no stats.  In his three seasons at Michigan State he played in two games as a redshirt freshman (in 2017) and recorded no stats. He has been hampered by knee injuries throughout his collegiate career.

Hunt prepped at Taylorsville High School (Sandy, Utah).  As a senior in 2014 he had 73 tackles with 16 tackles for loss, an interception, and 12 sacks (MaxPreps).  He was named to the All-State second-team.  His sophomore and junior seasons were at Brighton high school, where they won a state championship in 2012.  He was an All-Region and All-State basketball player as a senior.  Following his prep career Hunt served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Virginia.

Hunt is rated 3-stars by Rivals, ESPN, and 247Sports (0.8559), who rated him the no. 8 prospect from Utah for the class of 2016. He had scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Cal, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, Utah State, Washington, and Washington State (247Sports). He also saw recruiting interest from Oklahoma State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt.
