Harper prepped at Basha High School (Chandler, Arizona), where as a senior he compelted 35-of-70 passes for 517 yards and three touchdowns (to four interceptions), rushed 60 times for 264 yards and one touchdown, caught 11 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, and recorded 26 tackles (12 solo), with 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception (returned 40 yards), and five passes defended (MaxPreps).
He was named to the 2019 All-State first team, 6A Premier Region First-Team, and All-CUSD First-Team. Harper also played on the baseball team and competed in track and field.
Recruitment. Harper was rated 3-stars by 247Sports (0.8204), who rated him the no. 36 overall prospect from Arizona in the Class of 2020. He held scholarship offers from Abilene Christian, Air Force, Army, BYU, Colgate, Dartmouth, Fordham, Lehigh, Montana State, Navy, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Penn, Princeton, San Diego State, South Dakota State, Syracuse, Tulane, UTEP, Wyoming, and Yale.
Harper committed to BYU on December 16, 2019, signed two days later, and enrolled on August 1, 2020.
