BYU is looking to strengthen their kicking game by bringing in Matthias Dunn from Wasatch high school (home to fellow BYU kicker Skyler Southam). Earlier this week Dunn announced his commitment to BYU football (Class of 2019) via Twitter.
Blessed and excited to announce that after I serve a two year LDS mission I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at BYU! 🔵🏈 Thank you to all my coaches, teammates, friends, and family for helping me achieve this. Excited for the future! #COMMITTED #GOCOUGARS pic.twitter.com/i5dTfwxxSP

Dunn preps at Wasatch High School (Heber City, UT), where as a senior he had 56 kickoffs for 3744 yards with 52 touchbacks, and punted 36 times for 1385 yards (38.5 avg), placing ten of those kicks inside the 20. Dunn went 34-of-34 on PATs and 12-of-17 on field goals with a long of 48. He was named to the 5-A All-State first team. Dunn also runs track and cross country, and plays for the soccer team. He has impressive mid-distance times with a 2:02 800m, 4:41 1600m, and 17:05 5k. He is a 4.0 student with a 30 ACT score.
Dunn is rated 4.5 stars on Chris Sailer Kicking and holds a class rank of no. 148 nationally. He was recruited by Snow College, Tennessee, Utah, and Utah State. He will join the Cougars in 2022 after serving an LDS mission as a preferred walk-on.

I caught up with Dunn to ask him about his recruiting.
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Dunn: BYU gives me the best opportunity to excel and compete in both the classroom and the football field.
BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Dunn: Utah, Utah State, Tennessee, and Snow College
BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Dunn: Okay, my favorite movie is definitely Lego Batman. My favorite book would have to be Unbroken or Harry Potter. Shoe Dog by Phil Knight is good too. I love a lot of music so I don’t necessarily have a “favorite.” Favorite breakfast cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Fruity Pebbles, but I’d take Oatmeal, Eggs, Bacon, or Biscuits over cereal any day of the week.
BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?
Dunn: Probably signing to play college football at BYU. I’ve achieved a lot of things with track, soccer, cross country, and football, but nothing beats getting that opportunity to play at the next level. However, right now my church ball team is undefeated so if we win a championship this year I’ll have to reconsider.
BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Dunn: “Work hard, be positive, and have fun.” I get that from my dad every single day.
BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Dunn: Adam Vinatieri. He’s consistent, reliable, and an excellent kicker. He’s been playing forever, holds the record for field goals and points scored in nearly every category, and he’s a winner – which is the most important part of football.
