Recruiting Profile: TE Matthew Fredrick (Class of 2023)

Matthew Fredrick is the newest recruit to commit to play for BYU football (Class of 2023).  He announced his commitment earlier today, as reported on Twitter:

Fredrick is a 6-foot-5 230-pound tight end that preps at East High School (Salt Lake City, Utah), where as a junior he had two carries for 86 yards and 10 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown (MaxPreps). He also had 21 tackles (10 solo) on defense.  As a sophomore he had one eight-yard touchdown carry and one solo tackle. Fredrick also plays on the basketball team.

Fredrick is rated 3-stars by 247Sports (86), who rate him the no. 14 overall prospect from the state of Utah for the Class of 2023. He holds scholarship offers from Army, Idaho, Nevada, Navy, and New Mexico State.

I caught up with Fredrick to ask him about his recruitment:

BYU Insider: What did you choose BYU?
Fredrick: Because of the opportunity that it presents to me.  The education that BYU has to offer is next level.  And the player that the coaches envision in me is going to be incredible.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruitment process?
Fredrick: Navy, Army, Nevada, New Mexico State, Idaho, and Boise State were the main schools recruiting me.

BYU Insider: What is an athletic accomplishment?
Fredrick: Being named a team captain twice in football and once in basketball.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player you seek to emulate on the field?
Fredrick: My favorite tight end is Rob Gronk

Fredrick is the tenth player to commit to the BYU football Class of 2023.  He is the second tight end to commit, joining four-star recruit Jackson Bowers.
