Getting to know BYU commit, Maika Kaufusi (ATH, Class of 2022)

Maika Kaufusi is a BYU football commit for the Class of 2022, making a verbal commitment on March 15, 2021. 

Kaufusi is a 6-3 180 pound defensive back that preps at Alta High School (Sandy, Utah).  He comes to BYU as an athlete, have taken snaps at safety, linebacker, wide receiver, and long snapper.  He missed much of his junior season with a shoulder injury, but did have seven receptions for 135 yards (19.3 avg) and a touchdown.  On defense he had 10 tackles (seven solo) and a pass defended.  As a sophomore he recorded 37 total tackles (18 solo), three tackles for loss, four passes defended, a forced fumble, and an interception (MaxPreps).  

Kaufusi is rated 3-stars by 247Sports, who rate him as the no. 14 overall recruit from the state of Utah (Class of 2020). He has seen recruiting interest from Cal, Colorado, Utah State, and Yale.  Kaufusi is the younger brother to BYU linebackers Isaiah and Jackson.  He plans to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
