Getting to know incoming BYU football signee, WR Maguire Anderson (PWO, Class of 2021)

Maguire Anderson is a BYU football signee for the Class of 2021, signing with the Cougs on February 3, 2021. 

Anderson is a 6-foot-1 185 pound wide receiver that prepped at J.W. Mitchell high school (New Port Richey, Florida).  As a senior he 31 receptions for 443 yards and 11 touchdowns, rushed four times for 45 yards, and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass (MaxPreps).  On defense he had seven tackles (five solo) and a pass defended. He finished fourth in the state of Florida for return yards with 639 and fifth for return average at 42.4 yards per kick return. He returned four kicks for touchdowns.  Anderson was named to the All-State second team.  Anderson can run a 4.54 forty, a 10.9 100m, and can bench 270 pounds (HUDL).

As a junior at Sunlake high school (Land O’ Lakes, Florida) Anderson played on the soccer, baseball, and football teams.  As a receiver he had 35 receptions for 442 yards and four touchdowns, competed 2-of-3 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed five times for nine yards and a score. On special teams he had two kickoffs and a punt and returned 21 kickoffs for 589 yards (28 avg) and two TDS, and returned nine punts for 52 yards (MaxPreps).  He was named to the All-District and All-Conference first-teams, the All-State second team, and the Mitchell high school athlete of the year.

Anderson is rated 3-stars by 247Sports. He has seen recruiting interest from Florida, USF, and Utah (PWO), with scholarship offers from McPherson, Stetson, Valparaiso, and Warner.  Anderson’s father RJ Anderson played for BYU from 1995-97. 

I caught up with Anderson to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Anderson:  I have been a Cougar fan since I’ve been able to walk because my dad played football here.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Anderson:  Utah, Florida, and USF were showing some love but BYU was the easy choice.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Anderson:  My favorite movie is easily The Dark Knight and my favorite books are the Hunger Games.

BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?

Anderson:  Starting varsity for three different sports

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Anderson:  “Talent gets you in the field, but effort keeps you there.”
