I caught up with Vassau to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Vassau:  Because I feel it matches exactly what I need. After my official visit I felt all my questions had been answered. I knew it was the right fit once I returned home. The coaches, players, and other staff members made me and my family feel right at home. I am also excited to join an LDS environment as I’ve grown up in SoCal where the LDS community isn’t as popular. Having a university that supports me serving my mission right after high school is so valuable.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Vassau:  Army, Oregon State, Yale, Weber State, Cornell, and Utah State

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Vassau:  My two favorite movies are Forever Strong and Remember the Titans. I’m not picky with music–I like it all. My favorite breakfast is Chocolate Chip pancakes with bananas and whipped cream with some fruit and a protein shake on the side.

BYU Insider: What are some of your greatest accomplishments?

Vassau:  Achieving my dreams of playing D1 football at BYU. My greatest life accomplishment will be dedicating my life to the Lord for two years on my mission.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?

Vassau:  Payton Wilgar and Fred Warner because they both play the same position as me and both have similar stories as me. Payton Wilgar was a PWO like I am and was Freshman All-American. He later earned a scholarship and I plan to emulate my game like his. Fred Warner went to Mission Hills (San Diego, CA) a team I play in my league down here in Carlsbad. Watching him have a great career at BYU and then go on to play for a super bowl ring next this upcoming weekend really motivates me. He came from the same place as me so if I model my game like his I should be pretty successful.

BYU Insider: Is there anything else you’d like Cougarfans to know about you?

Vassau:  After I graduate in mid-June, I plan to stay for around a month after graduation so I can spend some extra time with my family and friends before I leave on my mission at the end of July. But, I will still leave early enough so that I get back for the upcoming season in 2022.
