High School. Hayes prepped at San Gorgonio High School (San Bernadino, California), where in two seasons he went 184-of-380 through the air for 3139 yards and 30 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. He also rushed 287 times for 2610 yards and 34 more scores. On defense he had eight tackles (three solo), with two passes defended and a fumble recovery. He also scored 12 points on 2-point conversions (MaxPreps).
Recruitment. Hayes was rated 3-stars by 247Sports (0.8234), who rated him the no. 187 overall prospect from California in the Class of 2017. He held scholarship offers from BYU, Cal Poly, Fresno State, and Oregon State. He committed to Oregon State on June 21, 2016. After three seasons he entered the transfer portal on January.
