I caught up with Esplin to ask him about his recruiting.
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Esplin: I’ve been a BYU fan for as long as I can remember. I could recite players’ names, numbers, and stats from memory since I was seven years old. It’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to play football at BYU. And BYU is the ideal fit for me. The football program is unbelievable, but I love the university’s focus on academics and preparation for life.
BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?
Esplin: I love music, especially country. During the pandemic, I actually started playing guitar and love it. When it comes to food, I’m a chocolate milk enthusiast and drink it by the gallon.
BYU Insider: What are some of your greatest accomplishments?
Esplin: In sports, my greatest accomplishment has been being a part of the Timpview football program and reaching the state championship game with my brothers. In life, I like that I’ve learned to work hard and balance myself in the varying roles I have in my family, at school, in athletics, and most importantly as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I hope to continue to improve in these areas.
BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Esplin: My parents have always encouraged me to have humble confidence. I tend to be critical of myself, so it’s been super helpful for me to realize that humility and confidence can go hand in hand.
BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Esplin: I grew up watching and admiring Taysom Hill. Our position and play styles don’t align, but I definitely look up to the resilience and team-first mentality that he’s had through college and now into the NFL.
BYU Insider: Is there anything else you’d like Cougarfans to know about you?
Esplin: I’m excited to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and will be heading out this summer.
Esplin will join the team as a preferred walk-on after serving an LDS mission.
