Jakob Robinson: DB #0, Class of 2020

Jakob Robinson is 5-foot-10 165 pound cornerback for Brigham Young University.  He comes to BYU as part of the Class of 2020 after spending his first season at Utah State University.

BYU summary: Made an impact in his first year with the Cougs, recording three interceptions and being named to the All-American second team.

  • 2022 (Sophomore).
  • 2021 (freshman). Played in 12 games, started five. Tied for team lead with three interceptions.  Named Second-Team Freshman All-American (The Athletic), First-Team All-Independent (Pro Football Network).
  • 2020 (redshirt freshman) at Utah State.  As a rookie he played in four games with a start against Fresno State.  For the season he recorded eight tackles (six solo), and a sack (USU profile) and was Utah State’s highest graded cornerback according to Pro Football Focus.  He earned academic All-MWC honors.

High School (2016-19). Robinson prepped at Orem High School (Orem, Utah).  As a senior he had 38 tackles and six interceptions, with 29 pass breakups.  On offense he caught 14 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns and returned two kickoffs for 145 yards and a touchdown.  He helped lead Orem to their third consecutive state championship and was named a Utah Class 5A All-State honorable mention.   Robinson also played basketball and was a member of the track and field team. His HUDL profile shows a 4.52 forty time.

Recruitment. Robinson was rated 3-stars (0.8118) by 247Sports and the no. 20 overall prospect from Utah. He had scholarship offers from BYU and Utah State.  Due to COVID Robinson has five years to play four at BYU.

I caught up with Robinson to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Robinson:  I love the culture here at BYU.  And my dad went here and it’s super close to home.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Robinson:  Mainly just BYU and Utah State

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Robinson:  I like any movie really, I’ll watch about anything.  I love hip hop and R&B.

BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment in sports?

Robinson:  Winning state titles three years in a row in high school

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Robinson:  My dad says “treat everyone like they are the most important person in the world.”

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?

Robinson:  Jalen Ramsey (CB, LA Rams)
