Getting to know BYU’s new speedy cornerback, Jacques Wilson (Class of 2020)

Jacques Wilson signed with BYU football during the early signing period in December but has been flying under-the-radar since his junior year at Hamilton HS four years ago. The JUCO transfer is fast and he’s ready to go.

Wilson played two seasons at West Los Angeles College, where he had 83 tackles, 21 pass breakups, forced six fumbles, and had nine interceptions.  He also returned kickoffs and punts.

Wilson prepped at Hamilton High School (CITY, CA), where as a senior he played just five games but had six carries for 44 yards, 16 receptions for 228 yards, 25 tackles (12 solo) two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and three interceptions.  In his junior year he caught 19 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns, had a 68 yard punt return, and recorded 68 tackles (47 solo), with two forced fumbles and two interceptions.  In track he won the city sectionals in the 100m with a time of 10.73.  His HUDL profile shows a PR of 10.47 in the 100m and 4.37 in the forty.

Wilson is rated 3-stars by 247Sports. He held scholarship offers from BYU, Hawaii, Southern Miss, and Utah State.

I caught up with Wilson to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Wilson:  Because BYU is filled with genuine love.  The coaches actually care about you as a person and your well-being—I’ve known coach Gil since I was in 10th grade.  I grew up in a religious, structured, happy and discipline home. That’s exactly what BYU is, BYU is going to keep me on track, whether that’s in school or on the football field. That’s why I know BYU is the perfect place.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Wilson:  The Wood (movie), As a Man Thinketh (book), Earth, Wind and Fire (band), R&B, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Wilson:  Nipsey Hussle & my grandparents always tell me to be a leader not a follower, and if you keep God first everything else will fall in line.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?

Wilson:  Stephon Gilmore (CB for the Patriots) or Jalen Ramsey (CB for the Rams)
