Tanner is a 6-foot-1 210-pound linebacker that preps at Rocky Mountain High School (Meridian, Idaho), where as a senior he had 127 tackles (62 solo), with 14 tackles for loss, and two sacks. He also has a reported 34.5-inch vertical, 285 bench press, and 425 squat (HUDL).
Tanner is rated 3-stars by 247Sports (80), who rate him the no. 14 overall prospect from the state of Idaho for the Class of 2023. He holds scholarship offers from Montana Tech and Southern Miss, with interest from Boise State and Nevada. His older brother Ty Tanner is a linebacker at Boise State.
I caught up with Tanner to ask him about his recruiting.
BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?
Tanner: Because of the culture. When I went on my visit, BYU felt like home. And I felt like everything the coaches had to say were true, which I think is rare. I could see that by the way the players connected, and by how everyone treated me, my mom, and the other recruits. BYU will set me up for success on and off the field.
BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?
Tanner: Boise State, Southern Mississippi, Idaho, Montana State, and Navy.
BYU Insider: What are some of your accomplishments in sports?
Tanner: Winning state my sophomore year, and being selected first-team All-conference and first team All-state as a linebacker my senior year.
BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?
Tanner: Malcolm Rodriguez from the Detroit lions.
Tanner has plans to serve an LDS mission and will join the Cougs in 2025 as a preferred walk-on.
