BYU Basketball Profile: Corbin Kaufusi (Class of 2014)

corbin-kaufusi_0Corbin Kaufusi is a 6’10” 245 pound power forward who walked onto the BYU basketball team for the 2014-15 season after being recruited and given a scholarship as a football player.  He was expected to be “a work in progress” but he saw consistent improvement throughout his freshman season, with season highs of nine points (vs. Portland), nine rebounds (Gonzaga), four assists (St. Mary’s) and four blocks (St. Mary’s). He played 32 minutes vs. Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Kaufusi prepped at nearby Timpview High School where he played one full season of basketball but focused most of his efforts on football. He was a reserve player as a sophomore on the 2009-10 4A state champion basketball team. In the 2010-11 season he averaged 11.5 points per game and had a season high 23 points (Lehi) and 15 rebounds (Mountain View). He opted out of playing his senior season in order to focus on football.

corbin_kaufusi_footballAs a football player he was second-team all-state in 2011 and a member of the state title teams of 2008 and 2009. As a three star defensive end he was recruited by BYU and Stanford to play offensive tackle. His father Steve is an assistant coach for the BYU football team, and his older brother Bronson currently plays linebacker for the Cougs. Following high school Corbin served an LDS mission to South Korea. He grew two more inches (to 6’10”) while on his mission and after playing pick-up basketball the summer following his mission decided to make the switch and try to walk-on to the BYU basketball team.
