High School. Pay prepped at Lone Peak high school (Highland, Utah), where he played offensive and defensive tackle (MaxPreps). Named to All-Region teams in 2015, 2016, and 2017 and 6A All-State second-team in 2016 and 2017. Also played on the Lone Peak baseball and basketball teams.
Recruitment. Pay was rated 3-stars by 247Sports (0.8519), who rated him the no. 14 overall prospect from Utah in the Class of 2018. He held scholarship offers from: Utah and Utah State and was also recruited by Boise State, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, USC, and Virginia. Pay committed to BYU on June 14, 2016.
Personal. Dad, Garry, played offensive line at BYU (1986, 1989-1992) and younger brother Trevor signed with BYU football as part of the Class of 2022 and is currently serving an LDS mission.
