Recruiting Profile: California transfer running back Christopher Brooks (Class of 2022)

Christopher Brooks is a recent commitment to the BYU football program (Class of 2022), announcing his commitment January 5, 2022 via Twitter:

Brooks announcement comes just days after BYU running back Tyler Allgeier declared for the NFL draft.  Brooks is already enrolled for the Winter semester so he is eligible to participate in Spring practices.

Brooks was a four-year contributor at Cal, leading the team in rushing in both 2019 and 2021.  He has been RB1 since his sophomore season (2019) when he rushed for 914 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 166 yards and four more scores.  His production dropped in 2020 due to a shortened COVID season and some minor injuries.  Those injuries carried over to 2021 where he started the season with limited carries.  However, as the season progressed so did his touches and he ended 2021 with 116 carries for 607 yards (5.2 avg) and four touchdowns and 19 receptions for 131 yards and three more scores.

In his four years at Cal Brooks has 1,734 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns, and 50 receptions for another 345 yards and seven touchdowns.

Brooks is a 6-foot-1 235 pound back that prepped at El Camino High School (Oceanside, California), where he had 3249 rushing yards on 529 carries for 34 touchdowns, to go along with 25 receptions for 260 yards (Max Preps). In 529 carries he fumbled just one time.  He also had 82 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, a quarterback hurry and two interceptions on defense.  He was also a member of the school’s track and field team as a long jumper.

Out of high school (in 2018) Brooks was rated 4-stars (90) by 247Sports, who had him as the no. 12 running back nationally. He received scholarship offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Boston College, Cal, Iowa State, Oregon State, San Diego State, UCLA, Utah, Utah State, Washington, and Washington State.

Brooks entered the transfer portal on December 6 and committed to Purdue a week later.  He de-committed from Purdue at the end of the month and enrolled at BYU for Winter semester.  He was also being recruited by Notre Dame, Arizona State, and San Diego State.

Brooks changes his name prior to the 2021 season from Christopher Brown Jr. to Christopher Brooks Jr. to honor his single mother, Raquel Brooks, who raised him.
