Updated Profile, BYU Football Commit: Charles West (Class of 2015)

west_charles_por2Verbal Commit Charles West (Class of 2015) signed a letter of intent to play for BYU on January 19, 2015. It was hoped that he would make fall camp and make an immediate impact as a running back. However, due to some off-the-field legal troubles his enrollment has been deferred. He showed some interest in enrolling at Palmetto Prep in South Carolina and then joining the Cougars in 2016. However, his prep school plans have fallen through. He is still hoping to transfer to BYU in January 2016, and coach Mendenhall shares this hope as he told Brandon Gurney of the Deseret News:

“We are hopeful Charles (can) join us, pending everything getting cleared up, and it looks like that has happened.”

West played running back at Coppell High School (Texas) where he was the District 5-5A All-District Offensive newcomer of the year as a sophomore, an all-district first-team honoree as a junior, and the District 6 offensive MVP as a senior. He rushed for 600 yards as a sophomore and 1,117 yards with 10 touchdowns as a junior. He also had 17 catches for 368 yards and six touchdowns, and during a game against Rockwall he rushed for 306 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries (27.82 yards per carry). As a senior West had 1465 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns and 129 receiving yards for two more touchdowns. He boasts a 10.42 100 meter time and a sub 4.4 forty (timed at the Army Combine). West also played shooting guard for Coppell’s basketball team.

West was awarded three stars from Rivals, who ranked him the #16 running back. Scout also rated him 3-star, while ESPN gave him three stars and a 74 rating. West was recruited by Arkansas, Arkansas State, Baylor, Cal, Colorado State, Kansas State, LA Monroe, Memphis, Nevada, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SDSU, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, Toledo, Tulsa, UCLA, and USC. West’s Coppell HS teammate Scott Huntsman has joined the Cougars as a preferred walk-on.
