Getting to know BYU’s newest Basketball Commit, JUCO guard Blaze Nield (Class of 2019)

The newest member to commit to BYU basketball is USU-Eastern guard Blaze Nield, who announced his commit yesterday via Twitter:

Nield spent last season at USU-Eastern where he averaged 20.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.  He shot 40.7% from 3-point land.   At Lehi high school Nield averaged 20 points per game as a senior and was ranked the #2 point guard and #10 overall player in Utah by ESPN.  He served an LDS mission to Washington D.C.

Nield holds scholarship offers from Idaho State, Montana State, and UMBC. He is also being recruited by Utah State.  He joins BYU as a preferred walk-on and is eligible to play immediately.

I caught up with Nield to ask him about his recruiting.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Nield:  I’ve grown up a cougar fan and have always wanted to represent this University. I also love coach Pope and all our coaches on the staff being able to play for them is a dream come true. Also Staying close to home was something important for me.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Nield:  Throughout my year this year I’ve talked to probably close to 50 division 1 schools and tons of different coaches. So it’s a long list, but here recently I had received official offers from UMBC, Montana St, and Idaho St.  I’ve also had the opportunity to play for Utah St.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Nield:  Remember the Titans, the Batman movies and the Avenger series; Drake, but I like to change up my music.  The Book of Mormon, Kobe’s book “The Mamba Mentality”; and I’m definitely a sucker for a good steak and fettuccini alfredo.

BYU Insider: What is one of your greatest accomplishment?

Nield:  I think as of now just becoming the person I am today. Learning how life unfolds on God’s time frame and how when you trust him and in his plan. Everything works out exactly how it needs to.

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Nield:  “What you do in the dark comes out in the light.”

BYU Insider: Who is a current player that you seek to emulate on the field?

Nield:  I’d say I look up to and try and emulate guys like Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving.

BYU Insider: Is there anything else you’d like Cougarfans to know about you?

Nield:  I want them to know how excited and honored I am to be a cougar!! We’re going to have a great year and I can’t wait to get started and show the cougar nation what I can do on the court!
