He prepped at Orem High School where he was a four-year letterman and finished his career as the all-time leading scorer with 1367 points. He was also a tree-time first-team all-state honoree and as a senior averaged 20.2 ponits, 8.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He was part of the Tigers first state championship in school history in 2012.
A consensus three-star recruit, he was rated 42nd in his position, 26 regional, and 3rd in state with a grade of 75 by ESPN. He was recruited by Arizona State, BYU, Creighton, Hawaii, San Diego, San Francisco, UC-Santa Barbara, Utah, Utah State, and Weber State. He joined a recruiting class of Payton Dastrup, Ryan Andrus, TJ Haws, and Jake Toolson which ranked no. 28 nationally according to 247sports.com (following the 17th ranked 2013 class). Originally he planned on serving an LDS mission straight from High School but was able to postpone his mission service until after his freshman season. He played the 2014-15 season as a non-scholarship player.
