Yoeli Childs is a Class of 2016 BYU basketball commit, commiting to the Cougars on September 12, 2015. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound “banger” who preps at Bingham (UT) High School is what his AAU coach Tim Davis calls “throwback guy”, who moves well for his size and has developed a nice hook shot. As a sophomore for the Miners he averaged 11.1 points and 5.3 rebounds and was named to the 5A third team. He posted a season high 22 points and 17 rebounds against eventual state champs Lone Peak in the 5A quarterfinals. During his junior season he averaged 16.1 points and 10.7 rebounds, leading the miners to the 5A quarterfinals and being named to the 5A first team. He had a season high 30 points and 15 rebounds vs. Durango, Nev. and was named to the All-Tribune team. In ten games this summer (2015) on the AAU circuit Childs averaged 11.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 25.0 minute per game against some of the best competition around the country.
Childs was offered scholarships to play for Auburn, Arizona State, Boise State, BYU, Idaho State, Utah State, Vanderbilt, and Wyoming. He also received interest from Cal, Davidson, Gonzaga, Harvard, Marquette, Michigan State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oregon State, Princeton, Stanford, and Utah. He is a 4-star recruit at ESPN (grade of 80) and Scout, and a 3-star prospect on on Rivals. ESPN gives Childs a positional rank of 13, regional rank of 6, and state rank of 2, and is No. 53 in the ESPN top 100. According to coach Davis “Yoeli is looking for a high academic school, somewhere he can play the three, four and five… He wants to go somewhere that plays their bigs inside but also lets them step out.” BYU also signed AAU (Utah Prospects) teammates Gavin Baxter and Connor Harding. Childs signed with BYU on September 12, 2015.
