Getting to know new BYU commit, RB/MLB Bailey Sulzer (Class of 2019)

Earlier this month BYU received a verbal commitment from California running back Bailey Sulzer (Class of 2019).

Sulzer preps at West Valley High School (Cottonwood, CA), where as a senior he carried the rock 283 times for 2,054 yards (7.3 avg.) and 29 touchdowns.  He also had nine receptions for 93 yards and a score, had 150 tackles (95 solo), 17 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries, an interception, three passes defended, four forced fumbles with two recoveries, and three sacks.  In three years as a starter he has 4048 yards of total offense with 59 touchdowns.  On offense he has accrued 255 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, two interceptions, six forced fumbles, and six sacks.

Sulzer will join the Cougars in 2021 as a preferred walk-on after serving a Spanish speaking LDS mission to Oregon.

I caught up with Sulzer to ask him about his recruitment.

BYU Insider: Why did you choose BYU?

Sulzer: BYU has always been my dream school.  My mom graduated from BYU, and it has always just felt like the place I needed to be. BYU is a great fit for me because of the atmosphere–both in football and on campus–it’s just something I’ve always wanted to be a part of. I look forward to reppin’ that royal blue in front of cougar nation representing my family and the school.

BYU Insider: What other schools were showing you love in the recruiting process?

Sulzer: I had interest from several schools but most notably Cal Poly and Montana.

BYU Insider: What are some of your favorites?

Sulzer: My favorite movie is Friday Night Lights.

BYU Insider: What is your greatest accomplishment in sports? In life?

Sulzer: In sports was winning a Section Championship and going to the state playoffs my senior year. My biggest accomplishment in life so far will be serving my mission.

BYU Insider: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Sulzer: My dad has always told me as I have grown up to never limit myself, never settle.

BYU Insider: Who is a current player (collegiate or pro) that you seek to emulate on the field?

Sulzer: Saquan Barkley, I want to have that type of explosion in my runs.
